Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights (8-7, Eastern Division #2) could not put distance between themselves and their Thruway Rivals, the Rochester Lancers (6-8, Eastern Division #3) on Sunday. The Lancers edged the Silver Knights 10-8 at the Blue Cross Arena.

Joey Tavernese scored three goals, all in the final quarter, to lead the Rochester charge.

The victory snapped a three-game Rivalry winning streak for the Silver Knights. Syracuse still holds the all-time advantage with a 15-7 record.

In a Derby with few opportunities to go around, Neto helped the visitors open the scoring. Kenardo Forbes found the Brazilian near the corner. From the acute angle, Neto finished the play off with a brilliant one timer to put ' Cuse up 2-0 3:09 into the first quarter.

With 4:14 to go in the opening frame, the Knights doubled their advantage. Bo Jelovac sent in a wall pass to Nate Bourdeau cutting across the middle. The Baldwinsville, New York native tapped it past Lancers GK Joe Kapinos to make it 4-0.

The Salt City club needed heroics to keep their lead in the second quarter. With 9:00 to go, Neto cleared the ball off the line on a Brad Vanino strike on goal. Bryan O ' Quinn was beaten after he stopped Andrew Hoxie ' s shot. Neto ' s defensive work kept Syracuse ahead.

The Lancers got on the board just 45 seconds before halftime. After a scramble in front, Yakiel Perez put away his chance. The visitors held a 4-2 mark heading into the break.

Rochester evened the score in the third frame. Mauricio Salles played a wall pass to Gary Boughton for the equalizer. It was 4-4 with 10:34 left in the quarter.

Neto finished his second goal of the game on a restart. Slavisa Ubiparipovic assisted the move, putting the Knights ahead 6-4 with 2:26 to go in the period. Tommy Tanner ' s team held the two-point lead heading into the final 15.

But again, the Lancers answered. Joey Tavernese tapped in Jeremy Ortiz ' s rebound and squared the score 6-6 less than five minutes into the fourth.

The Tavernese-Ortiz connection proved fruitful once again. Ortiz did the dirty work, stealing the ball and squaring it in front. Tavernese applied the finish, and Rochester took the lead 8-6 with 7:15 left.

Tavernese ' s third goal put the hosts up 10-6 with 5:09 to go in the game.

The Knights cut the lead to 10-8 with 43 seconds left. Neto finished his hat-trick on a toe poke in front. The target forward has 24 goals in the campaign.

Syracuse had two restarts in the final four seconds but could not manage a shot on goal. In the entire contest, Rochester blocked 8 of 18 total-shots from the ' Cuse.

SSK face Central Division foes over its next three matches. Syracuse travels to play the Milwaukee Wave on February 14 and Chicago Mustangs on February 15. The Orange, Silver and Black are back at home on February 19 against Chicago.
