January 25, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Rochester Lancers News Release

(Rochester, NY) - For the third time in two weeks the Rochester Lancers took on the Syracuse Silver Knights in MASL action. The intensity generated by the two clubs during the pair of matches in the Salt City carried over to Sunday's match played at the War Memorial at the Blue Cross Arena. Unlike the previous two that saw the Lancers lose an early lead, this time the crowd of 7,105 watched as the Lancers came from behind to defeat Syracuse 10-8 for the second time this season.

After taking first half leads in their previous two matches against the Syracuse Silver Knights, both high scoring affairs on the road, the Knights turned the tables on the Lancers Sunday afternoon, taking their own first half lead. First quarter scores by Neto and Nate Bourdeau gave the visitors the 4-0 first quarter advantage.

Midway through the second quarter, the Lancers were thwarted twice on point blank attempts, the first coming when Joey Tavernese had an open net and Syracuse "˜keeper Bryan O'Quinn out of position only to watch as Neto made a spectacular kick save in O'Quinn's place. Minutes later O'Quinn took care of business himself making a diving save on Gary Boughton in close. Rochester was eventually able to cut the Syracuse lead in half with just 45 seconds left in the first half as Yaikel Perez found himself alone at the penalty spot after a mini-scrum connecting with a left-footer that put the Lancers on the board.

The third quarter continued the low scoring trend of the previous two quarters yielding only three total goals. The first came off the foot of Boughton who finished off a rebound from the end boards from Mauricio Salles. Boughton's tally brought the Lancers even for the first time in the match, however the Knights regained the lead with just over two minutes remaining in the frame when Neto notched his second of the game. The third quarter wrapped up with the Knights holding a slim 6-4 advantage.

Despite the lack of offense, by the fourth quarter, the game had turned physical as defense became the word of the day. Trailing 6-4 and on the powerplay Jeremy Ortiz let go a shot from the top of the arc that caromed off the end boards to Tavernese who buried the equalizer with ten minutes to play. Over the next two and a half minutes, the Lancers generated scoring opportunities that did not connect, however with half the quarter in the books Salles sent a ball down the boards that Ortiz raced onto. After getting knocked down by a defender inside the arc, Ortiz regained his footing to find Tavernese who finished off the two-on-one giving the Lancers their first lead. Two and a half minutes later Tavernese struck again netting his third of the quarter to put Rochester up 10-6. Syracuse made the game interesting as Neto tallied his third of the game with under a minute to play to pull Syracuse to within a goal. The Lancers managed to hold of the Knights despite the extra attacker and a late flurry to earn the win at home.
