Silver Hawks Scrap to Steal One from TinCaps

April 17, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

A three-run bottom of the eighth inning gave the Midwest League Eastern Division-leading South Bend Silver Hawks (8-2) a come from behind 4-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (6-6) on a soggy Wednesday afternoon at Coveleski Regional Stadium. Catcher Roidany Aguila drove home the winning run for the Silver Hawks with a hit-and-run single to left field that scored Alex Glenn from second base.

The Silver Hawks got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Centerfielder Socrates Brito beat out an infield single to second base with two outs to get the rally started. Brito then stole both second and third before Ryan Court drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Court took off for second base during Glenn's at-bat and the Fort Wayne catcher could not handle the pitch from starter Walker Weickel. The ball rolled all the way to the backstop and Brito scampered home with the game's opening tally.

The TinCaps tied the game at one in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Dane Phillips led off the inning with a single to centerfield. He scored two batters later on first baseman Luis Tejada's line drive double to left.

The Fort Wayne rally continued in the top of the fifth inning as shortstop Stephen Carmon reached on a fielding error by South Bend third baseman Ryan Court. Maxx Tissenbaum's RBI single to right center brought Carmon around to score and put the TinCaps, a San Diego Padres Affiliate, out in front. After a walk to Jeremy Baltz and Dane Phillips' infield single to short loaded the bases, Gabriel Quintana plated Tissenbaum by grounding into a 6-4 fielder's choice and extending the Fort Wayne lead to 3-1.

Frank Santana came in for the Hawks in relief of Jesse Darrah to start the sixth inning. Darrah had pitched five innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out three TinCaps. The relief corps was the unsung hero of the game as Santana, Will Locante, and Enrique Burgos combined to throw four shutout innings. Burgos (1-0), who recorded his first win of the season, was particularly impressive, retiring all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings on groundouts.

Better late than never, the South Bend charge came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Fidel Pena led off with a walk. Brito followed with a double to the wall in right field. With Glenn batting, Fort Wayne reliever, Gension Reyes (1-1), made a great snag of a hard grounder back to him. However, in his attempt to get Pena at the plate, Reyes' throw sailed wide of the catcher, to the backstop. Both Pena and Brito came around to score while Glenn moved up to second. On the next at-bat, a call by South Bend manager Mark Haley for a hit and run would prove decisive as Aguila's RBI single was just out of the reach of third baseman Quintana as Glenn approached third and came around to score the go-ahead run.

South Bend is the Class-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Their winning streak stands at four.

The teams are back in action Thursday night at 7:05pm as the Silver Hawks look for the sweep. Joe Ross (2-0, 0.00 ERA) will be on the hill for the TinCaps while Daniel Watts (1-0, 3.00 ERA) starts for the Silver Hawks. Stay hydrated on Thirsty Thursday with $1 beers and sodas.
