Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
South Bend, IN - For the second straight day at Coveleski Stadium, the Fort Wayne TinCaps found themselves on the short end of a one-run game, being defeated Wednesday afternoon, 4-3, by the South Bend Silver Hawks. The TinCaps led, 3-1, heading into the eighth, but the bullpen could not hang on to the advantage, surrendering three runs to the Silver Hawks.
Fort Wayne (6-6) fell behind in the first inning when starter Walker Weickel allowed an unearned run to score. South Bend's Socrates Brito hit a two-out single, and proceeded to steal both second and third before scoring on a passed ball charged to catcher Dane Phillips.
The TinCaps answered the South Bend (8-2) surge with a lone run in the fourth on an RBI double from Luis Tejada. In the fifth, Fort Wayne plated two more runs with both Maxx Tissenbaum and Gabriel Quintana, which broke the tie and made it a 3-1 TinCaps lead.
Walker Weickel started the game for Fort Wayne and pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run. John Hussey, the 26-year-old who last pitched in a TinCaps uniform on June 11, 2010, turned in three scoreless innings of relief, handing over the reins to Genison Reyes in the bottom of the eighth.
Reyes (1-1, blown save) walked Fidel Pena to begin in the inning, and Brito followed with a double. After retiring Ryan Court on a pop-out to first, Reyes induced a grounder back to the mound off the bat of Alex Glenn. With Pena charging home from third, Reyes threw toward the plate, but his heave sailed over catcher Dane Phillips' head, allowing two runs to score, tying the game. Glenn ended up at second, and scored when Roidany Aguila doubled him in, sealing the 4-3 fate for Fort Wayne.
The Silver Hawks' Enrique Burgos (1-0) earned the win, retiring Fort Wayne in order in the eighth and ninth. The TinCaps were hitless for the last three innings of the game.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Joe Ross for Fort Wayne and Daniel Watts for South Bend. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
