South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN â Secretly in the South Bend Silver Hawks clubhouse, there was the idea the team could be successful in the 2004 Midwest League playoffs. Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne, the Hawks moved closer to their goal as they captured game one of the best-of-three series with a 4-2 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards.
The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the first. With one out, Jeff Cook singled to center and was plated when Alex Frazier tripled off the right field wall. Chris Carter then followed by grounding out to second, scoring Frazier.
Fort Wayne cut the Hawks lead in half in the third inning. Luke Carlin opened the frame with a single and advanced to second with a one out walk to Chris Kolkhorst. Carlin came home on a double to left by George Kottaras.
South Bend extended their lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Tila Reynolds drove in a pair of runs to give the Hawks a three run bulge.
Fort Wayne had golden chances in the sixth and seventh innings, loading the bases, but relievers Doug Slaten got Drew Macias to fly out and in the seventh, Jered Liebeck induced Sean Kazmar to groundout to Tila Reynolds to retire the side.
The Silver Hawks and Wizards continue their best-of-three series Thursday night at The Cove. Danny Muegge will throw for the Hawks and Sean Thompson gets the ball for Fort Wayne. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
