South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN – For many Silver Hawks fans, the winning of a playoff series seemed to take place so long ago. Thursday night at The Cove, the Hawks got out of the first round of the playoffs with a sweep of the Fort Wayne Wizards in a 5-2 victory.

The Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Chris Carter opened the inning with a base hit to left field and was driven home when Allen Mottram, who had not tripled all season long, tripled to left-center field to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Allen Mottram drove in another run in the third. With one out, Alex Frazier singled and advanced to second on a walk to Chris Carter. Mottram then followed with a single, scoring Frazier to advance the Hawks lead to 2-0.

Fort Wayne pulled within one in the third to make it a 2-1 lead, but the Hawks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to 4-1. Alex Frazier, who led the team in the regular season in RBI, drove in his first run of the post-season with a run scoring single in the fifth, while Jeff Cook's sixth inning RBI single moved the Hawks to a 4-1 lead.

Cook joined Mottram with a pair of RBI when he drove in Augie Murillo with an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Danny Muegge collected his first win of the post season and Dustin Glant earned his first save.

The Silver Hawks will face either the West Michigan Whitecaps or Lansing Lugnuts beginning Saturday in Grand Rapids or Lansing, with game two of the series to be played at The Cove Sunday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
