South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Midland, MI - If you're looking for a silver lining in the South Bend Silver Hawks 0-9 start to the 2010 season, just consider that the 2008 version of the Silver Hawks started the same way before rallying in the second half and winning the Eastern Division Championship.

Even still, that doesn't make this start any easier, as the Silver Hawks latest setback was a 4-2 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Friday night at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan.

Great Lakes dented the dish first on Friday night against South Bend starter Chase Anderson (LP, 0-2). Angelo Songco led off the second with a double down the right field line, and scored on a double by Blake Smith for the 1-0 lead. A wild pitch moved Smith to third and a sacrifice fly from J.T. Wise made it a 2-0 Loons lead after two innings of play.

The Silver Hawks plated a run in the top of the fifth, courtesy of two Loons errors. With one out, Ryan Babineau reached on an error by pitcher Will Savage (WP, 1-0) and moved to third on a double by David Narodowski. Ender Inciarte followed with a ground ball to short that was kicked for another error. Babineau scored on Inciarte's first RBI of the year to bring the Hawks within one.

The Loons committed another error in the sixth, leading the Silver Hawks into tying the game. Chris Owings reached on an error by third baseman Austin Yount and moved up to third on a couple of groundouts. Bobby Stone drove in his first run of the season when he lined a two out single to right, knotting the game at 2-2.

After setting down 13 in a row from the second to the sixth, Anderson saw that string break as he gave up his third run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Yount started the rally with a single to right and Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed with a single of his own. Jerry Sands then drove a double off the wall in right for the 3-2 Loons lead. Reliever Keny Sosa (ND) came in to end the rally, but the damage was done with the Loons leading again.

The Loons added an insurance run in the seventh, with Sosa balking in the fourth run of the night for Great Lakes.

Nick Gaudi (ND) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth for the Loons with Steve Smith (SV, 2) recording the final three outs for his second save in the series.

The Silver Hawks continue the six game road trip by heading to Dayton, Ohio for a three game set with the Dragons at Fifth Third Field. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM Eastern Time with LHP Dan Taylor (0-1, 5.40 ERA) going up against Dayton's RHP Jacob Johnson (0-0, 9.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
