Macon Mayhem News Release
The Mayhem dropped their eighth straight game on Saturday night in Peoria, falling by a 4-1 result.
Both sides exchanged power play opportunities in the first period, but the penalty killers held their ground. First, the Rivermen fought off a tripping penalty called on their Captain Alec Hagaman. The Mayhem responded by killing a roughing infraction served by Taylor Love, as well as an interference penalty against Alexander Taulien. The two successful penalty kills marked the twelfth straight successful PK by the Mayhem, spanning a course of four games.
Ian Sylves had been playing extremely well in net, turning aside a multitude of Peoria scoring chances and keeping the score tied all the way until the 15th minute of the second period. Finally, the Rivermen managed to solve the Macon net-minder on a power play.
Kevin Patterson spun the puck to the left side of the goal line for SPHL leading scorer Ben Blasko, who fed a crisp pass up the slot into the wheelhouse of Ralfs Grinbergs. The Latvian defenseman rifled a one-timer from the high slot over the glove of Sylves to break the ice and give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead.
Jake Hamilton doubled Peoria's lead in the closing minute of period two, performing a wraparound and tucking the puck past Sylves to give the Rivermen a 2-0 advantage. Peoria goaltender Storm Phaneuf had only faced nine shots through forty minutes of play, stopping all of them.
Hagaman built upon the home side's lead, ripping a one-timer from the right circle on a Peoria power play and beat Sylves inside the left post. Moments later, Hamilton collided with Sylves, which prompted a heated altercation between Patterson and former Riverman Dakota Klecha. Halfway through the third period, John Siemer spoiled Phaneuf's shutout bid with his tenth goal of the season on a Macon power play.
Despite a late surge by the Mayhem to spearhead a comeback, Justin Greenberg iced the game with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes. The Mayhem mustered a meager 15 shots on net, the lowest amount in a single game in franchise history.
Phaneuf denied 14 of the 15 shots Macon sent his way to earn his 11th win of the season, while Sylves was charged with his seventh regulation defeat after stopping 22 of Peoria's 25 shot attempts. The Mayhem will return to the Macon Centreplex to host the Evansville Thunderbolts for the first time this season on College Night, presented by Ann Parman Law Firm. Tickets are $10 apiece, $8 for college students, and $10/each for college groups, which include free Mayhem hats and an experience upgrade. Puck drops at 7:35 pm EST.
