Sidewinders Edged In Extras Against Fresno

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinder fell to the Fresno Grizzlies 11-9 Saturday in a wild 11-inning affair that featured 30 runs, 11 pitchers used, 20 runs scored and errors committed by both squads.

Fresno went up 2-0 in the top of the 1st, but Sidewinder leftfielder a ball onto the berm in the rightfield with the bases loaded to put Tucson up 4-2 in the bottom of the first. The grand slam was first for the Sidewinder this year. It was also Nixon's first home run for Tucson this season.

The team's exchanged blows in the middle inning until Tucson found themselves down a run heading into the bottom of the 7th. Donnie Kelly drew a leadoff walk, followed by a bunt single by Trent Oeljten. After Morgan and Bonifacio failed to advance the runners, Tim Raines Jr. hit a chopper back to the mound that Billy Sadler threw past first base to bring in two runs for a 9-8 Sidewinders lead.

Fresno knotted the game at nine apiece when Scott McClain hit a solo shot to left in the 8th that capped scoring in regulation and force extra innings. The Grizzlies would push in two go-ahead runs in the 11th to beat Tucson for the fourth time this season.

Every starting Sidewinders position player had at least one hit in the contest. The loss drops Tucson to 13 games below .500 at 2-15.

The Sidewinders and Grizzlies will play game two of the four game set Sunday. Right-hander Juan Gutierrez starts for Tucson against righty Juan Mate for Fresno. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 1:20 p.m.
