Sidewinders can't get by Beavers

Portland, OR - Shawn Wooten and Chip Ambres hit home runs as the Portland Beavers beat the Sidewinders 4-3 on Friday night. The Beavers won the series three games to one.

Evan MacLane worked seven innings for the Sidewinders but ran into trouble in the second through fourth innings that cost him. Jesus Merchan's throwing error in the second gave Portland a 1-0 lead and Ambres' solo shot to left made it 2-0 in the third.

The Sidewinders briefly grabbed the lead with three runs in the fourth. Tim Raines, Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Jamie D'Antona's double. Robby Hammock added a RBI groundout and Trent Oeltjen doubled home a run to give Tucson a 3-2 lead.

Portland came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs to claim the lead for good. Will Venable opened the inning with a base hit and with one out, Shawn Wooten clubbed a 3-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left for a two run home run.

Clay Hensley earned the win with six innings of work. He allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Hensley threw 81 pitches, 32 of them in the Sidewinders three run fourth.

Joe Thatcher retired the final four batters of the game for his second save.

The Sidewinders return home on Saturday night to open a four game series with the Las Vegas 51's at Tucson Electric Park. Right-hander Matt Torra (0-0, 4.50) starts for Tucson against right hander Miguel Pinango (4-4, 5.62) for Las Vegas. First pitch is at 7:00. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
