Sidekicks Win Road Opener 7-3 at Rio Grande Valley
The Dallas Sidekicks defeated the Rio Grande Valley flash 7-3 in the team's first road game Sunday night.
The win broke the Sidekicks' six-game road opener losing streak. The team is now 2-0 for the season. Goalkeeper Sagu was credited 34 saves, and the team's penalty kill was a flawless five for five.
Despite being outshot 10-3, the Sidekicks were the only team to score in the first quarter. Jamie Lovegrove gave the team an early lead, scoring just 23 seconds into the game with an assist from Kiley Couch. Lovegrove's goal was the third fastest in Sidekicks history.
Rio Grande Valley maintained possession throughout much of the quarter, but could only connect on goal. After the Sidekicks successfully killed their first penalty of the night, Renato Pereira put the team up 2-0 on a counterattack assisted by Lovegrove at 13:32.
The Sidekicks began the second quarter by killing their second penalty of the game. After a lengthy period of Sidekicks possession in Rio Grande Valley's end, Frank Mbemba found space to flick a right-footed shot into the corner of the net, putting the Sidekicks up 3-0 at 9:00.
Rio Grande Valley took over the majority of possession after the Sidekick's goal, but once again their success did not reflect on the scoreboard. At 12:07, Sidekicks midfielder Ricardinho chipped a shot over the opposition's goalkeeper to extend the team's lead to 4-0. Both goals in the second quarter were unassisted.
The second half got off to a quick start, Angel Hernandez scoring Rio Grande Valley's first goal of the night 33 seconds after kickoff. The Sidekick's momentum did not waver, and shortly after, Carlos Videla extended the Sidekicks' lead to 5-1 at 1:23.
The rough play extended into the second half of the game, the Sidekicks going on their first power play at 3:02.
Later in the period, Rio Grande Valley cut the Sidekicks' lead to 5-2. Sidekicks goaltender Sagu successfully blocked two shots before forward Jorge Duran managed to put in a deflection at 10:02. By the end of the third period, Sagu was credited with 22 saves.
Just 3:51 into the fourth period, Rio Grande Valley's Hernandez scored his second unassisted goal of the night, cutting the Sidekick's lead to two.
Soon after, Sidekicks midfielder Richardinho missed on a shootout opportunity awarded after a call for tripping in the arc. The Sidekicks remained on the power play however, and Videla scored his second goal of the night, putting the Sidekicks up 6-3 at 5:39. Robert Luevano was credited with the assist.
Just one minute later, a miscommunication from Rio Grande Valley's defense resulted in an own goal that increased the Sidekicks' lead to 7-3. Couch was given credit for the goal. Rio Grande Valley was also awarded a shootout in the fourth period, but could not capitalize, Armando Teran sending his shot wide at 9:01.
The Sidekicks will return home to the Allen Event Center for their next game, a rematch against Rio Grande Valley on Friday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m.
