DALLAS - Patrick Shamu scored with 21.6 seconds remaining to lift the Dallas Sidekicks to a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Wave at Reunion Arena Sunday night. Shamu gathered the loose ball just right of the net after Nick Stavrou's shot bounced off the boards.
The win improved Dallas to 19-14 on the season and gave them the split with Milwaukee of the weekend home and home as well as the four-game season series. All four contests have been one-goal decisions for the home team.
The winner came after Milwaukee (23-9) had rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the fourth quarter. Michael King and Joe Reiniger each had a restart goal 63 seconds apart. King scored off a pass from Greg Howes at 9:55 and Reiniger bent his shot around three defenders into the upper right corner at 10:58.
The Sidekicks built the lead on three unanswered goals. Kiley Couch tied the game a one each on his score at 11:20 of the third. Stavrou gave Dallas its first lead when he placed an Eric Dade pass into the back of the net with 17 seconds to go in the third quarter. It was the third consecutive game Stavrou had tallied in the final 30 seconds of the third period. Sinisa Alebic added to the lead when he scored a restart goal at 6:06. Chad Deering fed it to Alebic when taking the free kick in the offensive zone after an injury timeout for Wave defender Troy Dusosky.
The Sidekicks and Wave were scoreless for the first 34:50 of the game. Howes started the scoring on an assist from Lovelace Ackah 4:50 into the third frame. It was the fifth time the Sidekicks had gone scoreless in the first half and now have a 2-3 record in those games.
D.J. Horvath had five saves in the game for Dallas with his defense making 10 blocks. Horvath is 10-13 on the season, but has gone 5-4 since joining the Sidekicks. Nick Vorberg stopped 14 shots for Milwaukee as he dropped to 9-5 this year.
The Sidekicks have three games remaining in the regular season. The next is at Philadelphia Sunday March 28 at 12:05 p.m. followed by a home game against St. Louis Saturday April 3 at 7:05 p.m., and the finale at Monterrey Sunday April 4 at 6:35 p.m. All games are on KSKY 660 AM. The Sidekicks have clinched the third seed in the playoffs and will host the team that finishes sixth in the MISL overall standings. The first playoff game will be at Reunion Arena Saturday April 10 at 7:35 p.m.
