
Sockers fall to Blast

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Sockers (13-20) dropped their second straight home game with a loss to the Baltimore Blast (23-9) on Saturday, 9-5.
Quick scoring and furious play marked the first period. Former Socker Carlos "Chile" Farias started the first period with a goal at 4:03 off an assist by Denison Cabral to give the Blast the 1-0 advantage. Mariano Bollella, leading goal-scorer for the Sockers, evened the score at 4:48. The Blast answered right back with a goal from David Bascome, from aTarik Walker pass. It was the first of two goals on the evening for the forward from Bermuda (2-1). Sean Bowers answered with two goals to give the Sockers the lead at 12:44 (3-2). Paul Wright and Robbie Aristodemo were credited with the assists. The first period ended with Bascome's second goal at 14:36, assisted by All-Star MVP Giuliano Celenza (3-3).
The Sockers were shut out in the second period but Baltimore added two more to the scoreboard with goals by Lee Tschantret and Celenza to take a two goal lead into the halftime break. Ibrahim Kante assisted Tschantret while Celenza was unassisted.
Bollella started the second half scoring off on an assist by Wright and Paul Dougherty put the Sockers even with a power-play goal at 7:54 of the third stanza. The assist on the goal went to Bowers. Baltimore then started a 4-0 scoring run and ended the Sockers hopes for a victory. The game-winning goal came off the foot of Cabral at 8:33 of the third.The Sockers used several players as the sixth attacker in the fourth quarter, but were unsuccessful in their attempt to find the back of the Blast' net.
Sockers goalkeeper Victor Nogueira saved 7 of 15 shots faced and his record drops to 13-17. Baltimore's Scott Hileman earned the win with 14 saved of 18 faced.
The Sockers next travel to Milwaukee on March 28 to take on the Wave. San Diego's final regular season home game is Friday, April 2 against the Monterrey Fury.. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. This is the final opportunity for fans to enter into the drawing for a 2004 Hyundai Elantra, which will be given away at the conclusion of the game.
