Fayetteville Guard News Release

Fayetteville, NC --- Fayetteville Guard Head Coach Terry Smith has been replaced with former Oakland Raider Mike Siani. Smith resigned Wednesday evening sighting health reasons.

"It is an unfortunate situation," said team owner Richard King. "The team ownership has the up most respect for Terry and we hope he recovers soon."

Siani was a first round pick for the Oakland Raiders in 1972. He was named All-Rookie NFL team and finished second in voting for rookie of the year honors behind Franco Harris in 1972. Siani played seven seasons for the Raiders, making it to the Pro-Bowl in 1973 and the Superbowl in 1977, beating out the Minnesota Vikings in Superbowl XI. In 1981, Siani was traded and finished his career with the then Baltimore Colts.

Siani comes to the Guard from the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, of United Indoor Football. As Head Coach, Siani took over the Greyhound team, during a rebuilding year, and took the team to 1-4 before his release.

Prior to that, in 2004, Siani was Head Coach and General Manger of the Atlantic City Cardsharks. He led the NIFL team to a 9-6 record and lost to the Lexington Horseman in the first round of the playoffs.

For the 2003 season Siani was Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Myrtle Beach Stingrays. He took over the losing team and led them to four wins their last five games.

"We are honored to have a man of such stature join our team," King said. "We're looking forward to some wins under Mike's leadership."
