Hawgs assistant coach activated as kicker
April 21, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. â Hoping to alleviate their kicking game woes, the Daytona Beach Hawgs have activated their special teams coach for Sunday's National Indoor Football League game with the Rome Renegades at TUI Business Machines Field in the Ocean Center.
Tim Viens will handle kicking duties for the Hawgs (4-1) as they face the Renegades (2-2) in a match-up of Atlantic Conference division leaders.
Viens replaces Stephen Brown, who struggled in the Hawgs' past two games, missing eight of 12 PATS and a fourth-quarter chip shot field goal attempt Monday night in the Hawgs 38-26 payback victory over the Lakeland ThunderBolts.
Brown's 13 successful PATs in five games ranked him among the league's top ten kickers in that category, but his percentage (.481) was 21st in the 22-team league, compounded by that he's leading only a woeful New Jersey Xtreme team that's made just two kicks in its first five games.
"It's blatantly obvious that we have to make a move,'' said Hawgs Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson. "Stephen's a great guy and I've seen him make 18 or 20 in a row in practice, but he's simply not getting the job done during the games. I hope he sees this as an opportunity to rediscover his groove, because he can be an excellent kicker.
"Right now, we're in the middle of a playoff run and there are going to be games that are going to be close," Bryson said. "I have faith in my offense, faith in my league-leading defense and I need that faith in my special teams. Let's see what Tim can do."
The 28-year old Viens played collegiately at Glenville State (West Virginia) College and five years of semi-pro football in New York and Vermont. He was a two-year all star for the New England football league and was named MVP of the league's 2003 all star game.
