Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (31-30) out slugged the Fort Worth Cats (38-24) 8-7 off a walk off single from Thomas Shull in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Fort Worth hit the board first with a solo home run from David Bergin giving the Cats an early 1-0 lead. Bergin's home run added to his United League leading 11th homerun.
RGV answered right back with a leadoff walk from Albert Carpen. Roberto Ramirez then hit a routine fly ball where Chris Ellison allowed the ball to go in and out of his glove. The error proved costly, one batter later Cody Collins belted a two run single scoring Carpen and Ramirez giving the Wings a 2-1 lead.
Collins later scored on a bunt single from Goose Kallunki making it 3-1, the Wings tacked on two more runs giving them a 5-1 lead on a five run four hit inning.
In the bottom of the fourth Paul Mantalbano led off with a double down the right field line, Jake Mendiola later reached first on an infield bunt single.
Ramirez then scored Carpen on an RBI double adding to the lead making it 7-1 RGV.
Fort Worth however made things interesting in the top of the fifth inning Josh Band led off the rally with a one out walk. Band later scored on an RBI single from Ryan Miller, Miller then scored on an RBI double from Doug Freeman trimming the lead to 7-3.
Fort Worth cut the lead in half with a RBI double from Freeman scoring Ellison cutting the lead in half 7-4.
Fort Worth stormed back with a three run seventh inning. Cameron Monger scored on an RBI single from Bergin. Bergin then scored on an RBI single off the bat of Daniel Meeley. The Cats tied the game yet again on a RBI single from Greg Bachman.
In the Bottom of the ninth Ramirez led off with a smoking single right back up the middle. Collins then laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Ramirez to third.
This set the stage for Thomas Shull who worked the count full, then looped in base hit into right field scoring Ramirez from second as the Wings stole game three from the Cats.
The series finale is set for Sunday as RGV looks to win the series for the first time this season. The Wings send Brett Evins to the mound, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
