BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (63-65, 34-24) defeated the Birmingham Barons (57-68, 30-26) by a 7-6 score in 10 innings in the fourth game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Wednesday night.
Jacksonville trailed 6-4 with two outs in the eighth inning only to storm back and win 7-6 to even the series at two games apiece. Stone Garrett shined at the plate by tying a career-high with five hits, going 5-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored, and he came a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Jazz Chisholm came just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two RBI including a double and a triple.
Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Alex Vesia (2-0) earned the win by pitching the final three innings in perfect fashion with three strikeouts. Birmingham right-handed relief pitcher Codi Heurer (2-2) took the loss and blew a save in the ninth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Barons built a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI double by Damek Tomscha and an RBI single by Zach Remillard. An inning later, a bases-loaded walk to Tomscha grew Birmingham's lead to 3-0. Jacksonville started fighting back in the top of the third inning with an RBI triple by Chisholm to get on the board at 3-1. In the top of the fourth, Garrett tied the game at 3-3 as he powered a two-run home run to left-center field.
In the top of the fifth inning, Jacksonville took a 4-3 lead with an RBI single by Chisholm. The Barons responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, with RBI singles by Laz Rivera, Nate Nolan, and Luis Valenzuela to take a 6-4 lead. Jacksonville got to within a run at 6-5 in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Riley Mahan. In the top of the ninth inning, Adrian Nieto started the inning with a single. He was replaced at first by pinch-runner Anfernee Seymour, and he scored when Victor Victor Mesa laid down a sacrifice bunt, and a Huerer throwing error on the play scored Seymour to tie the game at 6-6.
In the top of the 10th inning, Garrett gave Jacksonville a 7-6 lead with an infield RBI single that scored Joe Dunand from third. Vesia worked a perfect bottom of the 10th to preserve the Jumbo Shrimp win.
Birmingham right-handed starting pitcher Blake Battenfield had a no decision, working five innings where he allowed four runs (all earned) on nine hits with one walk and a strikeout. Jacksonville left-handed starting pitcher Daniel Castano also had a working five innings where he allowed six runs (all earned) on 11 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Jacksonville manager Kevin Randel was ejected for the first time in 2019, arguing the final out of the top of the second inning with first base umpire Matt Bates.
The start of the game was delayed by 54 minutes due to rain in downtown Birmingham.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Barons will finish their series with the fifth game of the five-game set at Regions Field on Thursday night at 8:05 p.m. eastern. Left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers (1-1, 2.70 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Birmingham left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks (2-7, 4.80 ERA).
