Shrimp Lose, 1-0, Win, 8-4, to Split BayBears Doubleheader

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Cody Poteet pitched his first career complete game but lost, 1-0, in seven innings, before his team rallied from a 4-2 deficit for an 8-4, seven-inning win over the Mobile BayBears to split an Education Day doubleheader Monday in front of 4,509 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

In Game 1, Mobile (23-21) took a first-inning lead. First baseman Matt Thaiss and third baseman Taylor Ward hit consecutive one-out singles to left field, and designated hitter Zach Houchins hit an RBI double to left field. On catcher Michael Barash's flyout to right field, John Norwood threw out Ward at home plate. Poteet (2-4) shut out Mobile the next six innings, pitching Jacksonville's first complete game since Aug. 22, 2017, when Matt Tomshaw went seven innings for a 4-3 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Birmingham. Poteet allowed six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. BayBears left-hander Jose Suarez (2-10) went five scoreless innings, with two hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts to match a career high. Right-hander Ryan Clark allowed one hit in two scoreless innings to finish the game with his third save.

In Game 2, Mobile took a 2-0 lead on a Houchins homer and Barash RBI double in the first inning off right-hander Max Duval. Jacksonville tied the game in the bottom of the first against right-hander Matt Custred. Left fielder Kyle Barrett singled, and three straight walks forced in a run, before Norwood hit a game-tying sacrifice fly. Custred went one inning, and right-hander Samil De Los Santos pitched two shutout frames. In the top of the fourth inning, Mobile second baseman Connor Justus put down a bunt that Duval threw past first base, sending Justus to second. Catcher Julian Leon hit an RBI single and scored on center fielder Bo Way's RBI double. Jacksonville (18-27) answered in the bottom of the fifth, as Castillo walked center fielder Cade Gotta, first baseman Eric Jagielo singled, and Norwood and third baseman Brian Schales each hit RBI singles. In the bottom of the sixth, shortstop Chris Diaz walked, and Barrett hit a go-ahead RBI triple. Three more runs scored on designated hitter Monte Harrison's RBI single, Jagielo's RBI single - his third hit of the game - and a wild pitch. Right-hander Marcus Crescentini got the final three outs, saving a win for right-hander Kyle Keller (1-0).

UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp open a series in Mississippi at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. They return to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Tuesday, May 29, for the opener of a five-game series with Pensacola.
