Big Inning Spoils Homestand Finale

Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (19-25) could not overcome the aftermath of a four-run third inning from the Montgomery Biscuits (20-25) as they fell 7-3 in the series finale Monday night at Regions Field.

Turning Points: Brett Sullivan gave the Biscuits a lead they would not surrender, singling on a ground ball through the left side of the infield to drive Lowe across the plate for a 2-1 Montgomery advantage. Ryan Boldt extended the lead to 4-1 on the next at bat, clearing the bases with a two-run single.

Moment That Mattered: With runners on first and second, Trey Michalczewski ripped a triple down the left side, plating Zack Collins and Matt Rose to cut the four-run deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. However, Travis Ott minimized the damage with a pair of strikeouts to end Birmingham's threat.

By the Numbers: Eloy Jimenez, baseball's No. 3 prospect, continued to rip the cover off the ball, muscling a 410-foot blast over left-center in the bottom of the first for his eighth home run of the season. The long ball is Birmingham's 51st on the 2018 campaign - 11 more than any other Southern League team.

Facts and Figures: The loss marks the Barons fourth straight since a 12-11 walk-off win on Thursday and drops Birmingham into last place in the Southern League North Division for the first time this year.

Up Next: The Barons will enjoy a day off on Tuesday along with the rest of the league before travelling to Jackson for a five-game road swing beginning on Wednesday. Southpaw Matt Tomshaw (0-1, 5.75) will get start in the series opener against righty Justin Donatella (1-2, 3.03). First pitch is slated for 6:05 pm. Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
