Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Perfect Trip for Allen- It was a perfect 3-0 road trip for the Allen Americans (17-5-1) who won three consecutive one-goal games last week. Their journey started with a shootout winner in Arizona and then was followed by back-to-back wins in Denver over the Cutthroats. Impressively, the Americans went through the entire trip without defensemen Mike Montgomery and Brett Skinner. Anthony Maiani and Darryl Bootland have been the top Americans over the last five games with Maiani accounting for two goals and four assists and Bootland scoring four goals with one helper. Allen is in second place in the Berry Conference trailing Wichita by one point but the Americans do have three games in hand on the Thunder. Allen has a tough week ahead of them with games Friday at Missouri (13-9-2) and Saturday at home to Wichita (17-7-2) on tap.
2.) Home Cooking for the Holidays- The Fort Worth Brahmas (11-9-4) are one of the best teams on home ice this season with an 8-1-4 record and they are currently riding an eight-game home point streak with a 6-0-2 record over that stretch. The Brahmas are a league-best 99-29-15 at home since the 2008-09 season and are primed to make a move in the standings with seven of their next 10 games on home ice. This week, the Brahmas host Wichita on Wednesday and then play at Wichita on Friday night and return home to face the Missouri Mavericks at the Fort Worth Convention Center on Saturday night. Phil Fox has had the scoring touch lately with four goals in his last two games and veteran Chad Woollard has been a welcomed addition back to the line-up after missing time with an injury. He scored a pair of goals in Saturday's win over Arizona.
3.) Comeback Kids- The Wichita Thunder (17-7-2) have climbed back into first place thanks to a four-game win streak and in each of the last two wins the Thunder spent more time trailing than they did ahead falling behind Tulsa on Saturday night by a 1-0 and 2-1 score before winning 5-2 and trailing Fort Worth on Sunday by a goal on three occasions before ultimately winning 4-3 in a shootout. No team in the CHL has more wins when trailing after two periods this season than Wichita (3-6-1 when behind after two periods). Rookie Greger Hanson is coming off a four-goal week and he currently leads all rookies with 26 points (12-14&) and defenseman Kevin Young is the reigning Oakley CHL Player of the Week with goals in three straight games and the most points among blue liners (24 points). Goaltender Kevin Regan is in the zone lately with five straight winning decisions and just six goals allowed over that stretch.
By the Numbers
6: The number of times in seven meetings that the Rapid City Rush have earned at least a point against the expansion Denver Cutthroats. The two clubs meet for the eighth time this season on Tuesday night in Denver. The Rush are 3-1-3 head-to-head against the Fish and each of the last four meetings have been decided in a shootout with Denver winning the last three.
One-Timers
-Denver forward Brad Smyth's point streak now stands at 12 games, tied with Brett Skinner for the longest in the CHL this season. Smyth has 16 points during his streak and his 31 points (14-17=31) on the season are fourth in the league.
-The Quad City Mallards scored four goals in a 12:05 stretch of the third period on Friday night to beat the Rapid City Rush by a 4-2 score. Mickey Lang scored a pair of the goals and had an assist and for the Flock. It marked the first regulation loss of the season for Rapid City when leading after two periods.
-The Arizona Sundogs are stuck in the longest dry spell in the CHL this season as they are without a win in seven straight games (0-6-1). Arizona has scored just 14 goals over those seven games and has fallen to last in the league averaging just 2.42 goals per game. The Sundogs will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday in Missouri.
-Missouri's league long seven-game win streak came to an end on Sunday thanks to a 7-3 pounding by the top offensive team in the CHL, Bloomington. The Blaze now have scored six goals or more eight times this season and they are the only CHL team with more than 100 goals scored on the season (104).
