Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (3-5-1-1) lost a 7-1 game to the Brandon Wheat Kings (7-2-1-0) in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre in Regina on Tuesday.
The Raiders were without forwards Evan Herman and Ozzy Wiesblatt in the game. With Spencer Moe returning to the lineup, it left the team with just 10 forwards.
Matthew Culling scored the lone goal for the Raiders midway through the third period.
The Wheat Kings opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the contest after a turnover in the Raiders' end. Ben McCartney found Ridly Greig in front of the goal who was able to lift a backhander over Carter Serhyenko to give Brandon the early lead.
Shortly after the goal, Justin Nachbaur dropped the gloves with McCartney. Then less than a minute later, Adam McNutt squared off with Reid Perepeluk.
Brandon added to its lead midway through the first at the end of a power play. Nolan Ritchie was able to get a pass through across to top of the crease to McCartney, who put the puck into the empty side of the net to make it 2-0.
Early in the second, the Wheat Kings struck again. Neithan Salame sent Perepeluk in on a breakaway. Serhyenko tried to poke check, but Perepeluk was able to drag the puck around to find the back of the net 2:18 into the middle frame.
Dallyn Peekeekoot, who was making his WHL debut after officially signing with the Raiders earlier in the day, had the Raiders' best chance in the second. He stripped a Wheat Kings' defender at the blue line and had a breakaway. However, Peekeekoot put his shot just wide of the Brandon goaltender.
The Wheat Kings added another before the end of the second. Brett Hyland found Lynden McCallum alone on top of the crease. McCallum was able to tuck the puck into the post past the outstretched pad of Serhyenko to give Brandon a 4-0 lead after two periods.
The Raiders got on the board midway through the third period with a power-play goal. Remy Aquilon spotted Michael Horon in the left corner. Horon made a cross-ice pass to Culling, who buried his second of the season past a downed Ethan Kruger to make it a 4-1 game.
However, Brandon responded quickly on Vincent Iorio's third of the season, lifting a puck over the glove hand of Serhyenko.
The Wheat Kings added two late power-play goals from Ty Thorpe and Riley Ginnell to round out the scoring.
Serhyenko stopped 28 shots in the Raiders' net in the loss. Kruger made 28 saves to pick up the win for the Wheat Kings.
The Raiders are off until Friday afternoon when they take on the Winnipeg ICE (6-3-0-0) for the second time in the Subway Hub Centre. Game time is 4 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV.
