Joliet JackHammers News Release
FARGO, ND - Rory Shortell allowed four singles over nine innings, guiding the Joliet JackHammers (31-26) past the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (34-21) 11-0 Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Shortell faced 29 hitters, two over the minimum in the first complete game shutout by a JackHammer pitcher this season.
The offense provided plenty of run support, crossing home plate 11 times on 15 hits. Joliet scored ten times over the first four frames, bouncing Matt Mossey (3-3) in the fourth. Jonathan Wyatt singled and scored on a Brad Correll triple for a 7-0 lead. Jon Nelson followed with a run scoring double and Freddie Thon singled to run Mossey from the game. Kevin Rios singled off Jeremy Hauer after Nelson scored on a wild pitch to put the âHammers way out in front at 10-0.
Shortell put on the pitching display, retiring the first ten hitters before Zach Penprase reached on an infield single. The RedHawks would get three more singles, but didn't have a runner reach second base all night. The JackHammers turned two double plays behind Shortell, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
Mossey started the game strong, striking out Josh Flores and Wyatt to lead off the game. The right-hander then hit Correll and Nelson singled to put runners at the corners. Thon knocked in the first run with a single, his 43rd run batted in of the season.
Joliet plated five more over the second and third, scoring three unearned runs. Flores collected an RBI on a groundout and Carlo Cota booted a Wyatt groundball for another run and a 3-0 lead. Kevin Rios scored two with a bases loaded single in the fourth and Roberto Mena lifted a sacrifice fly to put Joliet up 6-0.
Mossey was charged with ten runs (seven earned) in 3.1 innings, allowing ten hits while striking out three and walking one.
Rios collected a game high four hits and three runs batted in while Nelson and Mena each slapped three hits.
The JackHammers will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon after scoring 19 runs on 29 hits in the first two games of the series. Devin Anderson (3-2) will go up against Tyler Seaman (1-0). First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. with a 12:50 p.m. pre-game show on the JackHammers Radio Network.
