Schaumburg Flyers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Flyers (21-36) rode the arm of starting pitcher Dustin Glant (5-3) to a much needed 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (28-31) at Canwest Park Saturday night.
Glant tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing just two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Flyers never trailed, scoring in the first inning on a Joey Gomes sacrifice fly to center, and then again in the second on Brandon Newton's two out chopper up the middle to plate Richard Mercado.
Schaumburg finished its scoring in the fifth, when Travis Brown and Ron Bourquin began the frame with back-to-back singles. Gomes lofted his second sacrifice fly to score Brown. A few batters later, Richard Mercado had a sacrifice fly of his own to bring in Bourquin and bring the Schaumburg advantage to 4-0.
Winnipeg struck back for one in the seventh inning on a Luis Alen two out triple off the left field wall. The next batter Vince Harrison then sent a soft ground ball down the third base line for an infield hit to score Alen for the first Goldeyes run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Glant went back out to the hill to finish off his gem. The righty walked Juan Dian and then quickly retired Kevin West and Alen. But Harrison drew a walk and Dee Brown sent a blooper down the right field line that dunked in for a double, scoring Diaz. Glant then battled pinch hitter Justin Justice to a full count, but got the left handed hitter to pop out to first base to end the game with the tying runs in scoring position.
Goldeyes starter Stephen Flake (2-3) was tagged with the loss in 4.1 innings. The righty gave up four runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
The Flyers play the rubber game against the Goldeyes at Canwest Park on Sunday afternoon. Todd Moser will take the hill for Schaumburg opposite Winnipeg's Antony Bello.
