The North Carolina Courage and Sky Blue FC played to a scoreless draw in front of 5,039 fans at WakeMed Soccer Park this weekend. The game was delayed at the 53rd minute when rain started falling and lightning struck, causing an hour and a half weather delay.
The Courage were without Abby Dahlkemper, Crystal Dunn, Jessica McDonald, and Sam Mewis who were named to the United States roster for the FIFA Women's World Cup. The team will lose several more players to the Women's World Cup in the next several weeks as well.
The Courage had two scoring chances hit the post: by Lynn Williams in the 19th minute and Debinha in the 33rd minute.
Lynn Williams strike that hit the post followed a great pass by Kristen Hamilton:
"We had many chances in the game," said Courage coach Paul Riley "A couple of shots that hit the post that would have changed the game. I was happy with our performance overall."
At the 89th minute of the second half Sky Blue forward FC Imani Dorsey launched a shot on goal that was stopped by North Carolina Courage defender Merritt Mathias:
Even after the 90-minute weather delay, it was still raining. One North Carolina Courage fan named Jess Joyner was soaked but stayed for the entire game, "I am committed fan and if the Courage are going be here, I will be here for them as well."
Joyner added, "With the Courage roster changes, to get a draw is a good result". She added that she has already purchased her tickets for the Women's International Champions Cup August 15th through August 18th that the Courage are hosting.
The North Carolina Courage hit the road for their next game against the Chicago Red Stars on May 19th. They will return home on May 5th at WakeMed Soccer Park against Utah Royals FC.
