Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - After a bottom of the ninth inning comeback to force extra innings, the Hickory Crawdads fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 7-6, before 972 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday evening. Hickory SS Edwin Garcia set a season-high for the 'Dads with five hits in the game, one shy of tying the all-time Crawdads record.
The Shorebirds (5-12, 33-53) shot ahead with five runs in the first two innings against RHP Jerad Eickhoff. RF Brenden Webb highlighted the early offense with two two-run home runs. In the top of the first, he pulled a home run to right field to swing the Shorebirds to the immediate lead. Then in the second, an RBI single by CF Glynn Davis and Webb's second two-run shot accounted for the early 5-0 lead.
The 'Birds added a run in the top of the third inning. After reaching base with a walk, LF Mikey Planeta stole second and moved to third on a fly out. Later in the frame, he scored on a wild pitch to put Delmarva up, 6-0.
The Crawdads (13-5, 49-38) began chipping away in the bottom of the fifth against LHP Matt Taylor. C Kellin Deglan led off with a triple to the right-field corner, and then quickly came home on an RBI single by CF Jordan Akins. After a base hit from LF Jhonny Gomez and a fielder's choice by 2B Rougned Odor advanced Akins around to third, he scored on an RBI sacrifice fly skied by 1B Trever Adams, bringing the deficit down to 6-2.
The Crawdads continued the comeback with a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Gomez led off the seventh with a walk and moved to third on a double by Odor. Gomez then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by DH Jorge Alfaro. 3B Drew Robinson started the eighth in the same manner, working a walk to get on. One out later, Robinson moved to second on a Garcia single, and then scored on another RBI base hit by Akins later in the frame, making it 6-4.
With their backs against the wall, the 'Dads tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. With two outs and no one on, Alfaro struck out on a wild pitch for what should have been the game's final out. However, the ball got away from C Wynston Sawyer and Alfaro was able to reach base to extend the game. Robinson followed with an infield base hit, compounded by a throwing error from 2B Tommy Winegardner, moving Alfaro all the way to third. After Grayson worked a walk to load the bases, Garcia ripped a two-run single to left field, tying the game at 6-6 and forcing a 10th inning.
After a scoreless 10th frame, the Shorebirds moved back in front in the top of the 11th against RHP Daniel Lopez (L, 0-1). With two on and two down, Sawyer placed an RBI double inside the third-base line, lifting the Shorebirds to the 7-6 lead.
The Crawdads managed a pair of base runners in the bottom of the 11th, but RHP Jesse Beal (W, 2-3) got out of the jam, closing the 7-6 win for Delmarva in 11 frames.
