
Curley Makes Most of First Impression

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 8, 2012) -- Third baseman Chris Curley made the most of his first game with the Kannapolis Intimidators, driving in a pair of runs including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in a 3-2 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Sunday evening at CMC- NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis won four of the five games against Greensboro this week, improving to 9-8 in the 2nd Half.
In his first at-bat with Kannapolis, Curley drilled a home run to left field for an early 1-0 lead. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Intimidators starter Matt Lane opened the game with four scoreless innings. In the fifth, Greensboro's Tony Caldwell led off with an infield single and moved to second base on a sac-bunt. Ryan Goetz doubled home Caldwell to tie game, 1-1, and Aaron Senne added an RBI single to pull the Grasshoppers ahead 2-1. Lane worked six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits in a no decision.
Reliever Kevin Vance (4-2), who turned 22 today, worked a pair of scoreless relief innings to earn the win for Kannapolis. Dustin Umberger spun a scoreless ninth inning for his first save as a member of the Intimidators.
The Grasshoppers tried to add to their lead in the top of the seven inning, but Bill Rice fired a strike from left field to catch Tom Caldwell at the plate to end the inning.
With Kannapolis down 2-1 in the home half of the seventh inning, Grant Buckner led off win a single up the middle and moved to third base on a pair of ground balls before Garis Pena doubled to left field to tie the game, 2-2. Pena finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
With a runner on first and one out in the eighth inning, Mark Haddow singled Kevan Smith to third, and Curley followed with a bloop single in left field that pulled the Intimidators ahead for good.
The Intimidators have Monday off before opening an eight-game road trip with a four-game series in Lexington on Tuesday. The team will play four games at Greensboro before returning to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for a four-game series against Charleston on Thursday, July 19.
