PREVIEW: The Shorebirds open their 2014 season with the annual exhibition game against Salisbury University. Delmarva won last year's matchup with the local college by the final score of 3-0. The Shorebirds finished the 2013 season with a 54-82 record.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Right-hander Austin Urban will start in the exhibition for Delmarva. Salisbury University has yet to announce a starter.
19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles won 2-1 on Opening Day over the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Chris Tillman pitched five innings and allowed just a single run, but he did not earn a decision. Offseason addition Nelson Cruz blasted a solo home run in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run. Former 2011 Delmarva Shorebird Jonathan Schoop made the Opening Day roster for the big league club. Starting at second base, Schoop went 1-for-3. The O's have won their last 4 Opening Day games at Camden Yards.
THE IRON IS HOT: 20 out of the 26 players on the Shorebirds roster appeared for the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL playoffs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
