Delmarva Wins Exhibition, 8-4 over Salisbury

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Salisbury University Sea Gulls 8-4 on Tuesday night. In the annual exhibition contest, the Shorebirds scored eight unanswered runs to coast to a victory. Delmarva has won each of the last five years against Salisbury.

Austin Urban made the start for Delmarva, pacing the Shorebirds with four solid innings atop the hill. The right-hander allowed a run in the third inning on a looping double to right field and RBI single by Kyle Hayman. Beyond that, Urban allowed only one baserunner.

Salisbury briefly led after Hayman knocked home Bill Root in the third. Delmarva immediately responded in the bottom of the frame. The Shorebirds scored three runs on RBIs by Gregory Lorenzo, Mike Yastrzemski and Trey Mancini.

In the fourth, the Shorebirds broke open the game with five more runs. Salisbury used four pitchers in the fourth inning with three walks and a hit-by-pitch helping the Shorebirds' cause. Anthony Caronia ripped a bases-loaded double to plate a pair of runs. Yastrzemski drove home another run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Conor Bierfeldt bounced a two-run single up the middle to extend the Shorebirds' lead to 8-1.

The Sea Gulls scored three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to cut into the Shorebirds' lead. Dennis Torres and Bennett Parry each threw an inning in relief for Delmarva. David Richardson finished off the 8-4 victory with a clean seventh inning.

Delmarva opens the regular season at Asheville, North Carolina on Thursday, April 3rd. Left-hander Steven Brault (0-0, 0.00) will start Opening Day for Delmarva against the Tourists' right-hander Johendi Jiminian (0-0, 0.00).
