Salisbury, Md. - Savannah pitcher Logan Verrett tossed a complete game nine inning shutout to lead the Sand Gnats (7-12) past the Delmarva Shorebirds (5-13) 2-0 on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The game lasted just one hour and 57 minutes.
Zach Davies tossed a career long seven innings and did not allow a run. Davies gave up just one hit over the final five innings he worked after surrendering five hits over the first two innings. The right-hander also struck out six, one short of his career high. Davies retired the final six batters he faced.
The Sand Gnats plated the only two runs of the game in the eighth inning against relief pitcher Devin Jones. Gilbert Gomez reached on a one out single. Then, Matt Reynolds was hit by a pitch. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Aderlin Rodriguez delivered a two out single up the middle to give the Sand Gnats a 2-0 lead.
Verrett scattered six hits over nine innings. He struck out seven batters over the final four innings including the final three hitters of the game.
The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats play game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05pm.
