CHARLESTON, SC - Tyler Anderson tossed six and a third shutout innings for the Asheville Tourists to earn the victory as they defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 6-1 on Tuesday night in South Atlantic League action in front of a crowd of 2,101 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs fall to 50-36 (11-8 in the second half) on the season with the loss. The Tourists' record now stands at 58-31 (11-8 in the second half).

Asheville took the lead in the third when a two-out rally yielded two runs. Trevor Story (2-4, 2 runs) scored the first run when he doubled and came around to score following a wild pitch and a passed ball. Brian Humphries then singled and stole second to bring up Will Swanner (2-5, 2 RBI), who lofted a double off the wall in center to make the score 2-0.

In the fifth, the Tourists took advantage of wildness by Charleston starter Bryan Mitchell (6-7) to tack on three more runs. The first two batters of the inning reached on a single and an error and two wild pitches brought in one run and moved the other runner to third. After a walk, Swanner and Harold Riggins each cracked RBI singles to increase the lead to five. Taylor Featherston provided some insurance in the eighth with a solo homer, his sixth of the season.

A five run cushion proved to be more than enough for Anderson (8-2). In six and a third innings of work, he scattered five hits and walked one with five strikeouts. The RiverDogs never mounted a serious threat against him, only once getting a runner to second base.

Will Rankin came in to relieve Anderson and induced a double play to finish the seventh and Russell Brewer retired the side in order in the eighth. Charleston scored a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Tyson Blaser (1-3, RBI), but that was all they would get against Jefri Hernandez, who got the last three outs.

BALLPARK FUN: Fans at The Joe witnessed the professional debut of former Arizona Wildcat Robert Refsnyder, who batted third and played right field for the RiverDogs. He was greeted with cheers and applause when he was introduced to the crowd at the start of the game.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs will send RHP Matt Bashore (1-2, 1.45 ERA) out to pitch game two of the series on Wednesday night against RHP Chris Jensen (9-2, 4.29 ERA) with first pitch at 7:05 pm. Seniors can purchase $5 tickets and will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, soda and chips on Senior Wednesday. It will be Preservation Night at the stadium, with the Charleston Preservation Society promoting preservation to help keep South Carolina clean. The RiverDogs will also be announcing preservation facts during the game. Also on hand at the game will be Denny McLain, the last 30-game winner in the Major Leagues, who will be signing autographs and selling books on the concourse.
