LAKEWOOD, NJ - The 1st-place Hickory Crawdads started the eight-game road trip on a winning note, topping the Lakewood BlueClaws, 5-4, before 5,796 fans at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood on Tuesday night.
The Crawdads (14-5, 50-38) raced in front with four runs in the top of the first inning against LHP Ethan Stewart (L, 4-8). SS Rougned Odor started the inning by reaching on an error and quickly took second on a passed ball. After 1B Trever Adams singled Odor to third base, 3B Drew Robinson, one out later, knocked him home with an RBI single for the 1-0 lead. A wild pitch plated Adams from third and advanced Robinson to second base, before CF Chris Grayson ripped an RBI double to bring in Robinson. A pair of walks loaded the bases, and then 2B Nick Urbanus placed an RBI infield single to score Grayson for the frame's final run, leaving Hickory in front, 4-0.
Lakewood (10-9, 36-52) scored three runs through the second and third frames against LHP Will Lamb (W, 3-6). After a lead off double by LF Aaron Altherr in the second, an RBI double by 1B Brock Stassi and then an RBI sacrifice fly by 2B Alejandro Villalobos later in the frame cut the deficit to 4-2. Lakewood then loaded the bases with no outs to start the third, but Lamb got out of the jam with only one run coming in, keeping the 'Dads in front, 4-3.
The 'Dads stretched the lead back out in the top of the fourth inning. Odor started the frame with a triple, and then darted home on an RBI ground out by Adams, making it 5-3.
After Lakewood scored in the bottom of the fifth, the Crawdads bullpen took over and slammed the door. RHP Phil Klein struck out the side in both the sixth and seventh innings, before RHP Arlett Mavare (S, 3) tossed scoreless stanzas in the eighth and ninth, closing the 5-4 win for Hickory.
