New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-In their very first shootout of the season the Scorpions prevailed with a 4-3 victory over Rapid City on Saturday night. Ross McCain scored the game winner in the seventh round.
The Scorpions came out hard in the first period but had nothing to show for it. Through 20 minutes the Scorps outshot Rapid City 17-7, but the game remained scoreless.
Rapid City was first to get on the board as Blaine Jarvis scored his fifth goal of the season 4:21 into the second period. The Rush increased their lead as Chris Lipsett stuffed home a power play goal.
New Mexico used their power play prowess to tie the game late in the middle frame. Tom Maldonado scored his first professional North American goal at the 14:17 mark. Jamie Herrington tied the game as he got his stick on a Maldonado shot and was able to deflect it into the net.
The Scorpions grabbed their first lead of the game when Seth Leonard scored his 21st goal of the season. The Rush tied the game at three with a Gio Flamminio shorthanded goal.
In overtime, the Scorpions had a chance to win the game with a power play opportunity. Rapid City goaltender Miguel Beaudry did not allow it, making two of his 49 saves in extra session.
New Mexico hosts three games next week. Wednesday Odessa rides into the Santa Ana Star Center. On Friday and Saturday Laredo comes for a weekend set. Valentine's Day is Pink in the Rink Night to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. All three games start at 7:15 p.m.
