Erie Otters News Release

David Shields' blast from the slot with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Erie Otters (13-14-1-10) their fourth win in a row, as they defeated the Guelph Storm, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Tullio Arena. Shawn Szydlowski scored his second hat trick in just over a week, marking the first time in team history in which an Otter had a hat trick in three consecutive games.

Greg McKegg found a loose puck in the right corner of the Storm zone and fed a perfect pass to Shields on the trailer in the slot. The St. Louis Blues prospect found the twine with his second goal of the season to send the Otters crowd into a joyous rapture. The overtime goal was the Otters' first at Tullio Arena since November 22, 2007, when Nick Palmieri defeated the Belleville Bulls.

The Otters continued the trend of strong starts to begin games, as a Storm turnover led to the Otters' first goal 1:38 into the contest. Szydlowski picked up the puck at the red line and skated to the top of the right circle, where he fired a laser through the blocker side of Brandon Foote for his first of the game.

David Broll put the Otters up by a pair early in the second. The second year winger deflected a shot from the high slot by Phil Varone at 1:42 for his fourth goal of the season.

The Storm then rallied for three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead, the last two coming on the power play. Michael Latta, Peter Holland and Tyler Carroll all scored to put Guelph ahead with 7:49 remaining in the second.

The Guelph lead did not last for long, as the Otters converted on a power play of their own. Szydlowski scored his second goal of the game as he slammed in a rebound off of a blast by Luke Cairns at 13:34 to tie the game heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, the two teams continued to not to give up much on the offensive end. A Szydlowski penalty led to a power play for Guelph, who capitalized. Taylor Beck fooled Ramis Sadikov with a shot from the right circle with 4:41 remaining in regulation, which appeared to be the game-winner.

Szydlowski made sure that Beck's shot wasn't the decider as he grabbed a hat trick in dramatic fashion. After Brett Cook kept the puck in Storm territory, he found Pelech on the opposite point, who fed it on for Szydlowski in the slot, where he ripped a shot under the crossbar for the hat trick, his 14th goal of the season with 1:45 remaining in regulation.

After a frenetic final minute in which the Storm maintained constant pressure in the Otters zone, the game went to overtime. With a shootout looming, Shields banged home the game-winner to complete a six-point weekend for the Otters, who improve to 8-7 at home.

The Otters will venture to Kitchener Friday night to take on the Rangers at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at ottershockey.com (courtesy of the James H. Cross Company).
