Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors set a modern day franchise record for consecutive wins with their eighth straight today after topping the Owen Sound Attack 6-3. The win improves the Majors league leading record to 22-2-0-1 on the season.
The teams exchanged goals but midway through the second period the Majors took the lead and didn't look back to defeat the Attack for the second time this season and conclude the season series with Owen Sound. The line of Casey Cizikas, Devante-Smith-Pelly, and Riley Brace did the most damage for Mississauga as the three players scored four of the six goals in the game. Cizikas got things started for the Majors at 14:09 of the first period when he jammed his wraparound attempt passed Jordan Binnington to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. Garrett Wilson tied things up for the Attack in the final minute of the first period after a give away in the Majors zone proved to be costly. Wilson took the pass from Joey Hishon and put a backhander high over the glove of JP Anderson to make it 1-1 and close the scoring for the first period.
The Majors took advantage of an early five-on-three power play advantage and Devante Smith-Pelly put his one timer past Binnington to retake the lead for Mississauga at just 1:38 of the second period. Cizikas faked the shot from the point and passed to Dylan DeMelo in-front of the Attack goal, DeMelo then made a quick pass to Smith-Pelly who made it 2-1. Garrett Wilson again tied things up for Owen Sound when he was the recipient of Matt Stanisz pass to beat Anderson and make it 2-2. The Attack turned the puck over in their zone when a failed clearing attempt went right to Jamie Wise. Wise made no mistake and fired a shot that beat Binnington up high to restore the Majors lead at 3-2 and Mississauga took the one goal advantage into the intermission.
Just over a minute into the third period Riley Brace put the Majors ahead by two with his fourth goal of the season. Stuart Percy dumped the puck in and Smith-Pelly grabbed it and made a backhanded centering pass to Brace who was alone in-front to beat Binnington to make it 4-2. The Attack pulled to within one at 14:37 when Gemel Smith tipped in Michael Halmo's point shot, it would be the closest Owen Sound would get as the Majors scored two more goals courtesy of Joseph Cramarossa and Devante Smith-Pelly to make it 6-3 and that's how it would finish. JP Anderson made 35 saves and records his sixteenth win of the season for the Majors. Jordan Binnington stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced in a losing effort for the Attack.
The Majors will now hit the road for four straight road games beginning next Thursday night in Brampton. On Friday, Mississauga will travel to London to play the Knights for the first time this season, and on Sunday the Majors square off with the Guelph Storm. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale.
