Shields gets win record

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) downed rival Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays), 8-5. With the win, Cards manager Tom Shields passed Jeff Shireman (NJC 97, 99 00) on the all-time wins list to become the winningest manager in franchise history with 97 wins. Adam Acosta picked up the win for the Cards, while Jarrad Lavergne took the loss for the Cards. Cory Doyne worked a scoreless 9th to pick up his 6th save of the season.

The Cards took an early 3-0 lead after the 2nd inning. Jake Mullinax reached on an error and, one out later, advanced to second on a Levi Webber single. Then, with two outs, Cory Taillon doubled home two runs and eventually came around to score on Matt Shepherds RBI single. The Cards added another run in the 4th when Mullinax doubled and came in to score on Webbers sac fly. In the 5th, the Renegades came back to take a 5-4 lead, but the Cards went back on top in the 7th.

Webber singled and scored on Casey Grimms double to left. Taillon sacrificed pinch runner Tim Cantu to third and then Shepherd drove in his second run of the night with a sac fly. The Cards added a pair of runs in the 8th on a Wes Swackhamer double for the final margin.

On the night, Mullinax and Webber both picked up two hits, while Swackhamer and Shepherd both knocked in two runs. Acosta, Jackson Paz and Doyne each made scoreless relief appearances for the Cards.

The Cards open a 2-game series with Brooklyn on Friday, and play the finale at Skylands Park on Saturday night beginning at 5:00 pm. On Sunday, the Cards open a home and road series with Staten Island (New York Yankees), playing at Skylands Park on Monday night at 7:15. Following an off-day on Tuesday, Williamsport (Pittsburgh Pirates) stops in for a two-game set. Saturday there is a Thunderstixx Giveway sponsored by Roccos Italian Deli, Family Catch on the Field and a Boy Scout Sleepover, Monday night is Kids Eat Freecourtesy of KFC and the New Jersey Herald, and Wednesday is Dog Dayssponsored by the Daily Record.
