WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The Cards went 4-4 last week, dropping 2 out of 3 to Oneonta (Detroit Tigers), taking 2 of 3 from Brooklyn (New York Mets) and splitting a pair of games with Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays). They are currently 26-24 on the season and in 3rd place of the McNamara Division of the New York Penn League, 3.0 games behind division leading Brooklyn.
PLAYOFF PUSH: The Cards are only 2.0 games out of a wild card playoff spot. Hudson Valley (28-22) holds the wild card lead, and the Cards have 4 games remaining with the Renegades, including tonight at 7:15 pm at Sklyands Park. New Jersey is only 3.0 games behind division-leading Brooklyn, and the Cards and Cyclones hook up for 5 more games this season, including Saturday night at 5:00 pm at Skylands Park.
BIRDS WITH BATS: The Cardinals are batting .254 as a team, 6th in the league. Since returning to the lineup from a wrist injury on July 22, 2B Chris Patrick has hit safely in 14 of his 18 games and batted at a .414 (29-for-70) clip. He has now hit safely in each of his last 5 games, including a 5-for-5 effort on August 9 at Brooklyn, and is hitting .375 (9-for-24) during that streak. Patrick currently leads the league in hitting with a .345 batting average. SS Matt Shepherd has also wielded a hot bat of late, hitting safely in 8 of his last 10 games and batting .343 (12-for-35) over that stretch. OF Wes Swackhamer has recorded at least one hit in 12 of his last 14 games, hitting .291 (16-for-55) during that span. OF Steve Sherman snapped a 7 game hitting streak on August 7 at Brooklyn. During the streak he batted .345 (10-for-29), and he has hit safely in 28 of his last 35 games, recording a .293 (39-for-133) batting average over that time. 1B Levi Webber picked up 3 hits, including a home run, and scored 3 runs on August 7 at Brooklyn. 3B Jake Mullinax is currently 6th in the league with 59 hits and 5th with 33 RBI.
CARDINALS HURLERS: The Cardinals carry a 3.87 ERA as a team, 8th in the league. A month ago, on July 14, the team carried a 4.89 ERA which was last in the league. Since July 13, the Cards bullpen has recorded a 1.61 ERA (117.2, 21 ER) and, since July 16, the staff as a whole has pitched to a 2.79 ERA (235.1 IP, 73 ER). RHP Miguel Aguero won his 3rd straight decision on August 8 against Brooklyn, pitching 7 innings and allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 10 hits while recording 4 strikeouts. Over his last 4 outings, Aguero is 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA (23.0 IP, 2 ER). RHP Dan Baysinger made his first two appearances of the season after spending the first half of the year on the DL, recording 1.2 scoreless innings in outings against Oneonta and Brooklyn. RHP Cory Doyne has not allowed a run since July 29 a Mahoning Valley (Cleveland Indians), a streak which spans 6.0 innings pitched. Since joining the club from Johnson City, RHP Michael Gross has made 3 scoreless appearances, pitching 4.1 shut out innings. RHP Quinton Robertson pitched a complete game, 6 inning shut out against Oneonta on August 4. RHP Derek Roper has not allowed a run in his last 14.0 innings, setting a Cards individual season-high.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The Cards open a 2-game series with Brooklyn on Friday, and play the finale at Skylands Park on Saturday night beginning at 5:00 pm. On Sunday, the Cards open a home and road series with Staten Island (New York Yankees), playing at Skylands Park on Monday night at 7:15. Following an off-day on Tuesday, Williamsport (Pittsburgh Pirates) stops in for a two-game set. Saturday there is a Thunderstixx Giveway sponsored by Roccos Italian Deli, Family Catch on the Field and a Boy Scout Sleepover, Monday night is Kids Eat Freecourtesy of KFC and the New Jersey Herald, and Wednesday is Dog Dayssponsored by the Daily Record.
