Shaw Park to Host Baseball During 2017 Canada Summer Games

WINNIPEG, MB - Shaw Park, home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, will be one of three venues used for baseball during the Canada Summer Games in 2017.
Located in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, Shaw Park will host two baseball games per day on July 31st, August 1st, and August 3rd, as well as the Bronze and Gold Medal games on August 4th.
"The 2017 Canada Summer Games venues are some of the biggest and best the Games have seen, and Shaw Park is no exception," said Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO of the 2017 Canada Summer Games Host Society. "We are excited to host the baseball competitions at the home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, and are fortunate to have formed relationships with existing first-class venues that will help us to deliver an exceptional athlete, team, and visitor experience."
Baseball has been a staple of the Canada Summer Games since the event began in 1969 in Halifax-Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Provinces and territories can submit rosters of up to 20 male players aged 18 years or younger. All 10 provinces will participate in the 2017 Canada Summer Games.
"Myself, my coaching staff, and of course, the players within our program are becoming increasingly excited as the Games draw closer," said Faron Asham, Head Coach for Team Manitoba Baseball. "We have been in the process of identifying, training, and competing for the last 24 months, and as the thoughts get closer to the reality of the actual games, the excitement is growing.
"The baseball community throughout the Province has truly 'pitched in' to make the baseball team a true Manitoba team," Asham continued. "The fact that the Games are in our Province, the magnitude of the athletes, and the community as a whole banding together to put on these Games is truly invigorating."
Originally built in 1999, Shaw Park hosted the 1999 Pan American Games in which Team Canada captured the Bronze Medal. The facility has been home to the Winnipeg Goldeyes since that same summer, and has consistently ranked among the leaders in per game attendance across all levels of minor league baseball. Koskie Field and Whittier Park will serve as the other two venues for baseball.
The 2017 Canada Summer Games take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba from July 28th through August 13th. The Games feature 16 sports, more than 250 events, and a major cultural festival. Over 4,000 athletes and coaches will participate, while the Games are expected to draw better than 20,000 visitors to the city.
The Canada Games are the country's largest multi-sport event for young athletes. This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Games and coincides with Canada's 150th birthday. Winnipeg will be the second Manitoba host for a summer edition of the Games. The 1997 Canada Summer Games were held in Brandon.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes open the 2017 season May 18th on the road against the expansion Cleburne Railroaders. The Goldeyes' 2017 home opener is scheduled for Monday, May 29th versus the Sioux Falls Canaries at Shaw Park. 2017 season tickets, 10-game mini packs, and group tickets are on sale now.
