Sharks Training Camp Report: March 4
March 4, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks returned to the practice field on Tuesday, kicking off the second week of training camp with a full-contact workout on Sea Best Field at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
After the team rested on Monday following Sunday's preseason scrimmage, Tuesday's practice was a high-energy affair, with players eager to get back on the field and work on their craft. In addition, it was the first time in 2014 that the Sharks were able to practice inside the arena, a great opportunity for the team's young receivers and defensive backs to go through a high number of quality reps with the walls in play.
Competition between the offense and defense continued through positional drills into the team session. In particular, some of the Sharks' veteran defensive linemen were vocal in encouraging their group to give their best effort on every play in order to make the offensive line better. Though players are still fighting for roster spots, as the regular season approaches there is definitely a focus on working together to improve the team as a whole.
The team came together at the end of practice to cheer on kicker Fabrizio Scaccia, who worked his way backwards down the field, eventually knocking home a 51-yard field goal to finish off Tuesday's workout.
The Sharks will have an opportunity to get more quality reps in the arena tomorrow, as the team will return to Sea Best Field for Wednesday's practice.
Player Spotlight
Veteran defensive lineman Jerry Turner returned to the Sharks' active roster on Monday evening, and was ready to roll for his first practice of 2014 on Tuesday. Heading into his eighth AFL season - and second in Jacksonville - Turner is set to follow up the career year he put together in 2013.
Last season, Turner quickly emerged as one of the leaders of the Sharks' dominant front four, matching a franchise record with three sacks in a single game against the Pittsburgh Power in Week 2. A force throughout the campaign, Turner earned a Second Team All-Arena selection after leading Jacksonville with 14.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and three blocked kicks.
After Tuesday's practice, Turner talked about his offseason preparation.
"You know, it's my job. I had to come down, make sure I come back into camp up to weight," Turner said. "Not overweight, not out of shape. We're professionals, we've got to come in and be ready to go."
Transactions
The Sharks announced several transactions on Tuesday, as defensive back Tracy Belton, wide receiver London Crawford, wide receiver Jeron Harvey and wide receiver Tristan Purifoy have been activated from physically unable to perform. In addition, defensive back Terrance Smith has been placed on physically unable to perform, wide receiver Jeremy Kelley has been placed on recallable reassignment, while defensive lineman Corey Hasting and defensive lineman Jeremiah Turner have been placed on reassignment.
Up Next
The Sharks will continue training camp with a practice on Wednesday. Wednesday's workout will be held on Sea Best Field at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena and is set to start at 8:30 a.m.
