SaberCats Shuffle Roster Ahead of Stockton Event

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose SaberCats announced they have been assigned eleven players to their training camp roster over the last three days. The SaberCats head to Stockton Arena on Wednesday, March 5 at 6:00 pm for a preseason event against the LA KISS.

Newly added to the SaberCats training camp roster are Mountain View product wide receiver Doug Williams, San Jose State defensive back Brandon Driver, defensive linemen Kyle Jenkins and Roosevelt Kirk, offensive linemen Jeff Nady, Gabriel Hampton and John Steele, linebacker Jerome Williams, fullbacks Jason Heath and Wondell Rutledge and kicker Jason Myers.

Correspondingly, the team placed defensive backs Ken Fontenette and Clevan Thomas, offensive lineman Rich Ranglin, defensive lineman Luis Vasquez, wide receiver Rod Harper and linebacker Francis Maka on the physically unable to perform list.

"Our players are really looking forward to playing on Wednesday," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "We are excited about how the team is coming together during training camp, and we are looking to give Stockton a great show."

Doug Williams (6-3, 210, Panhandle State) is a native of Mountain View, California. Williams attended Panhandle State in Oklahoma, where he helped the team go 6-5 in 2010, the team's first winning season since 2004, and earned Division-II All-American Honors.

Brandon Driver (5-10, 175, San Jose State) played two seasons for the San Jose State Spartans. In 17 games, Driver recorded 50 tackles (39 solo) along with one interception and seven passes defended.

Kyle Jenkins (6-4, 265, NIU) played one season as a redshirt senior for Northern Illinois University. He recorded 29 tackles and one-and-a-half sacks on the 2011 season, and capped off his career with seven tackles in the Huskie's GoDaddy.com Bowl win.

Roosevelt Kirk (6-3, 280, Stony Brook) played two years as a member of the Seawolves. In 2011, he started all 13 games, recording 33 tackles and seven tackles for loss en route to being named first-team All-Big South. In 2010, Kirk appeared in ten games, starting three and recorded 15 tackles along with one blocked punt.

Jeff Nady (6-7, 305, Nevada) spent four years as a member of the Nevada Wolf Pack. He appeared in 42 games, starting 36 times over the course of his career. Nady was named Second-Team All-WAC in 2011.

Gabriel Hampton (6-5, 330, Georgia State) played three seasons for Georgia State. He made 12 appearances as a Panther. Hampton also spent two years at City College of San Francisco, where he helped the team go 10-1 in 2009.

John Steele (6-5, 305, Stephen F. Austin) played three years for Stephen F. Austin football. He appeared in 34 games over the course of his college career, and was named Second-Team All-SLC in 2010 and All-SLC Honorable Mention in 2011.

Jerome Williams (6-2, 270, Connecticut) played three years at the University of Connecticut. Over his 16 game career, Williams recorded eight tackles.

Jason Heath (6-3, 285, UNLV) played two seasons for the UNLV Rebels. He appeared in 21 games, starting 13.

Wondell Rutledge (6-2, 305, Toledo) is a two-year AFL veteran. He appeared in two games last season for the Orlando Predators, rushing 11 times for four years. In 2012, he played for the Tampa Bay Storm, recording 28 yards on 11 carries along with seven tackles (six solo) and a fumble recovery. Rutledge attended the University of Toledo for his college football.

Jason Myers (5-11, 190, Marist) played four seasons for the Marist Red Foxes. Myers knocked through 24-of-35 field goal attempts over his career, and 70-of-77 extra point attempts over his final three seasons. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, he was named Honorable-Mention All-Pioneer Football League.

The SaberCats head to Stockton Arena on Wednesday, March 5 at 6:00 PM for a preseason event against the LA KISS. In addition, local Stockton celebrities including former gold medal hurdler Andre Phillips, boxer Yaqui Lopez, San Diego Chargers wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins and BC Lions (CFL) running back Tim Brown will be in attendance for an autograph session prior to the event.

Stockton Mayor Anthony Silva, NFL Referee Pete Morelli, MMA Fighter Jennifer Tate and Stockton businessman Dan Cort are all scheduled to take part in the event as well.

Tickets to the event are free to all SaberCats Season Ticket Holders. Tickets can be purchased through ticket master ( www.ticketmaster.com) or on Wednesday at the Stockton Arena Box Office.
