Sharks push past Columbia for late win

A victim of several tough-luck losses so far this season, Wilmington Sharks pitcher Mat Batts took things into his own hands on Saturday night, delivering a complete game on the mound as the Sharks (3-1) plated two late runs for a 2-1 road victory over the Columbia Blowfish (2-4) in CPL South action.
Batts (1-3) allowed six hits in the win while striking out five Blowfish batters. Batts also got himself out of trouble in the later innings, ending the eighth with Columbia runners are each base. In the ninth, Batts induced a game-ending flyout with two runners on to give the Sharks the win.
The Sharks offense had their own late game heroics, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth got the win after Columbia held the lead most of the night after a Zach Smith RBI double in the third inning.
In the eighth, Jake Mayers opened the frame with a walk before scoring on a Daniel Aldrich RBI triple one batter later.
Aldrich didn't spend much time on base either, scoring and giving the Sharks the lead on Vickash Ramjit's sacrifice fly to right field.
The Sharks only tallied five hits on the night, with Alex Freedman's 2-for-4 night the only multi-hit effort. Justyn Carter, Ricardo Lizcano and Aldrich each finished with a hit each in the win.
Wilmington travels to Morehead City on Sunday night before playing a doubleheader in Fayetteville on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Sharks return home to the Shark Tank to begin a four-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Fayetteville at 7:05.
