Forest City Owls News Release
FOREST CITY, N.C. - The Forest City Owls defeated the Martinsville Mustangs, 9-2, Saturday night at McNair Field. The Owls improve to 4-3 in the second half and 20-14 overall, while the Mustangs fall to 3-3 in the second half and 16-16 overall.
Andrew Brown (Akron) turned in another top-notch performance for Forest City this evening, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out seven batters and walking one. Brown earned his second victory of the season. Martinsville's Drew Provence (North Greenville) gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of action, recording four strikeouts and two walks and taking his third loss of the year.
Both teams took turns beating the tar out of the ball in an action-packed first inning. The Mustangs kicked off the scoring in the top of the first, when Derrick Hopkins (Southern) singled in A.J. Nunziato (Lander). Forest City answered with three runs in its half of the frame. Konstantine Diamaduros (Wofford) ripped a double down the right field line that brought Buddy Sosnoskie (Francis Marion) home. Diamaduros would score on Dusty Quattlebaum's (Gardner-Webb) single to center field and Cameron Conner (N.C. State) doubled Quattlebaum home to put the Owls ahead 3-1 at the end of the first inning.
The Mustangs inched closer in the second inning, when Brad Vance (Southern Indiana) smacked a single to right field that scored Preston Lyon (Pfeiffer). That was the last run Martinsville would score all night, as Forest City ran off six unanswered runs. The Owls scored a run apiece in the third and fourth innings. Danny Canela (N.C. State) ripped a single into right field that sent Reed Harper (Austin Peay) scampering home in the third frame, while Sosnoskie's sacrifice fly to right brought Craig Manuel (Rice) home in the fourth.
The Owls would add a couple more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, thanks to a fielder's choice that allowed Jordan Betts (Duke) to score and an RBI single by Quattlebaum. Betts put the finishing touches on Forest City's offensive explosion by launching a two-run home run over the left field wall in the seventh inning. Colby Suggs (Arkansas) entered the game in the eighth inning in relief of Brown and tossed two scoreless innings to secure the 9-2 victory for Forest City.
Quattlebaum had a night to remember, finishing 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Diamaduros went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Hopkins and Vance each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Martinsville.
The Owls return to action tomorrow night, when they will host the Florence Red Wolves at McNair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
