March 5, 2015 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks announced today that the team has made three additions to its 2015 roster, as defensive back Carlton Brown and offensive lineman Moqut Ruffins have been assigned on one-year contracts, while defensive lineman Donte Rumph has been assigned on a one-year rookie contract. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The 29-year-old Brown (5'10", 195) enters his seventh season in the Arena Football League. He spent each of the last two years with the San Antonio Talons, recording a total of 89.5 tackles, 22 pass breakups and 10 interceptions in 23 games over the course of those two campaigns.
Previously, Brown enjoyed two separate stints with the Utah Blaze (2008, 2012), spent the 2011 season with the Kansas City Command and played with the Milwaukee Iron in 2010. For his career, Brown has totaled 37 tackles, 43 pass breakups, 16 interceptions, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He has also chipped in on special teams, returning two kickoffs and once missed field goal for touchdowns over the course of his career.
A native of Grenada, Mississippi, Brown finished his collegiate career at Jackson State University, where he earned First-Team All-SWAC honors in 2006.
The 30-year-old Ruffins (6'5", 320) heads to Jacksonville for the start of his sixth season in the Arena Football League. Like Brown, Ruffins also spent each of the last two seasons in San Antonio, where he saw action in 33 games. In addition to his primary blocking duties, Ruffins was remarkably productive as an eligible tight end, hauling in five touchdown passes in both 2013 and 2014.
Before heading to San Antonio, Ruffins spent the 2012 season with the Pittsburgh Power, played with the New Orleans VooDoo in 2011, and broke into the AFL with the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings in 2010. Over the course of his AFL career, Ruffins has caught 51 passes for 466 yards and a total of 16 touchdowns. He has scored two or more touchdowns in each of his AFL seasons.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Ruffins attended Louisiana Tech. Recording 79 tackles and three sacks during his collegiate career, Ruffins earned All-WAC honors in 2005.
The 25-year-old Rumph (6'3", 320) is set for his first experience in the Arena Football League. He got his first taste of professional football in 2014, competing in training camp with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.
Rumph spent his collegiate career at Kentucky, where he was a fixture along the Wildcats defensive line, appearing in a total of 46 games over the course of his four years at the school. As a senior in 2013, Rumph recorded 47 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. The previous year, he set a personal best with four sacks during the 2012 season.
Rumph is a native of St. Matthews, South Carolina, who attended Calhoun County High School.
In other Thursday transactions, the Sharks announced that defensive back George Baker, wide receiver London Crawford, wide receiver Shamar Graves and defensive back Terrance Smith have been played on Physically Unable to Perform. Additionally, wide receiver Jeff Hughley and fullback Jared McGriff-Culver have been placed on Refused to Report.
