Shark Snap Shot: The Worcester Sharks (22-15-3-2, 49pts) chomped four out of a possible six points in three games last week as they continue to pile up the points. Worcester began the week with a come from behind 3-2 win over the Pirates in Portland on Wednesday for a franchise best 8th straight victory. The Sharks dropped a 3-2 decision vs the Devils on Friday which snapped a franchise best nine game point streak (8-0-0-1) but closed out the unofficial first half of the AHL season with a 2-1 overtime win in Albany on Saturday.
Worcester sits in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 49 points (22-15-3-2) and 8th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks have won nine of their last ten games and have points in 10 of their last 11 (9-1-0-1) dating back to Jan 3.
Highlights from the week include a natural third period hat trick from rookie Jeremy Langlois in the 3-2 win in Portland on Wednesday. Tough guy Jimmy Bonneau served as an emergency backup goaltender in Portland on Wednesday as Troy Grosenick fell ill right before game time. JP Anderson went 2-1-0 in three starts last week and allowed just six goals. Tomas Hertl (two assists) and Barclay Goodrow (first fighting major) each made their AHL debuts with Worcester skating in two games last week. Mirco Mueller scored a power play goal for the Sharks on Friday while Gus Young scored his first professional goal vs. the Devils on Saturday. Dylan Demelo capped off his fantastic week which included his 1st NHL recall, with his 2nd overtime game winner of the season in the Sharks 2-1 overtime win on Saturday to close out the unofficial first half of the AHL season as the Sharks headed into the AHL All-Star break in style.
Head Coach Roy Sommer was behind the bench at the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic in Utica on Monday while Sharks defenseman Matt Taormina added two assists in the All-Star game as the West defeated the East 14-12.
Last week saw the first NHL recall for Sharks defenseman Dylan Demelo on Jan 20 - Demelo was returned back to Worcester on Jan 22 after he was a scratch in the SJ Sharks game vs. the Kings on Jan 21. San Jose Sharks first round draft pick Mirco Mueller (18th in 2013) was assigned to Worcester on a conditioning assignment on Jan 20 and picked up a power play goal in three games before he was recalled on Jan 26. San Jose Sharks first round draft pick Tomas Hertl (17th in 2012) and Barclay Goodrow were assigned to Worcester during the NHL All-Star break and they each made their AHL debuts on Friday vs. the Devils. Hertl (0-2-2) and Goodrow (fighting major) each skated in two games for Worcester before they were recalled on Jan 26. In addition, the Sharks released Greger Hanson on Jan 20, recalled goaltender Aaron Dell from Allen (ECHL) on Jan 22, and loaned defenseman Nick Jones to Indy (ECHL) on Jan 22. As of Jan 27, Matt Tennyson, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Mirco Muller, and Barclay Goodrow are with the SJ Sharks.
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is forward Jeremy Langlois. The 24-year-old from Tempe, Arizona recorded three points (3-0-3) in three games last week - which included his first AHL hat trick as he scored three goals in the third period to lead the Sharks to a 3-2 come from behind victory in Portland on Jan 21 for Worcester's franchise best 8th straight win.
COMING UP:
The Worcester Sharks return back to action after the four day AHL All-Star break with two games this weekend.
On Friday, the Sharks travel to Providence for a 7:05pm start vs. the Bruins to kick off a home-and-home series.
On Saturday, the Sharks host the Bruins during the 4th annual "PINK in the RINK" event to benefit the Cup Crusaders presented by Pepsi on Saturday. For the fourth straight season, the DCU Center Ice will be colored PINK and the Sharks will wear commemorative PINK jerseys sponsored by Pepsi to benefit the Cup Crusaders and to support breast cancer awareness and research.
The PINK jerseys will all be auctioned off through raffle, Chinese auction, silent auction, a post-game live auction, and a select few via an online auction; with proceeds to benefit the Cup Crusaders. The Sharks will also be selling PINK mystery autograph pucks with proceeds to benefit the Cup Crusaders.
Before the Worcester Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7pm, the St. John's high school varsity hockey team will battle St. Peter-Marian high school at 4pm in the 9th annual High School Hockey Classic presented by Anna Maria College. Hang out with the WXLO Street Team as doors at the DCU Center open at 3:30pm with one ticket good for both games!

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1310 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,646 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4. Coach Sommer is two wins away (598 wins) from 600 in his career.

- Rookie Chris Tierney had 23 points (7-16-23) in 24 games in Worcester this season and two points (0-2-2) in 14 games for the San Jose Sharks. Tierney ranks 14th in the AHL in rookie points despite playing in just 24 games.
- AHL rookie Jeremy Langlois ranks 10th among AHL rookies with 24 points (14-10-24) in 40 games. His 14 goals are 2nd best in the AHL among AHL rookies.
- Melker Karlsson has been impressive so far with the San Jose Sharks. Melker has 11 points (7-4-11) in 19 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!
- Daniil Tarasov leads Worcester with 25 points (10-15-25) in 41 games this season.
- Freddie Hamilton is 3rd on the Worcester Sharks with 24 points (8-16-24) in 39 games and has played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0).
- Matt Taormina leads all Worcester d-men (tied with Fedun) with 20 points (5-15-20) in 42 games. Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic later this month in Utica.
- Micheal Haley is 2nd on the club in goal (11), leads the club in fighting majors (7), and tops in penalty minutes (67). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season. Haley ranks 1st in the AHL with a 25.6 shooting percentage.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 15-6-1 record in Worcester with a 2.67 GAA and a .905 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester and is riding a six game win streak and is 8-1-2 in his last 11 starts overall.
- The Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL with only 10.05 penalty minutes per game and have allowed the fewest amount of power play goals against (18).

The Worcester Sharks (21-14-3-2, 47pts) picked up a franchise record 8th straight win after a come from behind 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates (22-17-3-0, 47pts) in front of 1,844 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena on Wednesday evening. Jeremy Langlois scored a natural hat trick in the third period after Worcester trailed 2-0 through 40 minutes. JP Anderson made 16 saves while Jimmy Bonneau served as the backup goaltender as Troy Grosenick fell ill right before game time. Evan Trupp added three assists and Bryan Lerg had two helpers as Worcester also set a franchise record with a nine game point streak (8-0-0-1).

The Worcester Sharks (21-15-3-2, 47pts) had their franchise best eight game win streak come to an end after a 3-2 loss to the Albany Devils (20-14-3-5, 48pts) in front of 3,654 fans at the DCU Center on Friday evening. The Sharks and Devils will meet again on Saturday in Albany at 2pm for the final matchup before the AHL All-Star break. Tomas Hertl and Barclay Goodrow each made their AHL debuts for the Worcester Sharks while JP Anderson made 17 saves in his third straight start in net for Worcester. Albany had a 3-0 lead early in the second period before Mirco Mueller and Evan Trupp got the Sharks close but Worcester came up short as their nine game point streak came to an end.
1.24.15 - Albany 1 - Worcester 2- OTW - Times Union Center - Albany, NY
The Worcester Sharks (22-15-3-2, 49pts) closed out the unofficial first half of the AHL season with a hard fought 2-1 overtime victory over the Albany Devils (20-14-4-5, 49pts) in front of 7,012 fans at the Times Union Center on Saturday afternoon. Gus Young scored his first professional goal late in the second period while Tomas Hertl set up defenseman Dylan Demelo at 4:04 of sudden overtime for the victory. JP Anderson made 20 saves in net in his 4th straight start and Barclay Goodrow picked up his first professional fighting major for the Sharks as Worcester has won nine of their last ten games.

The Worcester Sharks (22-15-3-2, 49pts in 42gp) are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division; which is nine points behind the 1st place Monarchs (58pts in 42gp), two points behind the 2nd place Pirates (51pts in 44gp), one point ahead of the 4th place Bruins (48pts in 44gp), and seven points ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (42pts in 45gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*Quick Strikes (thanks Ballou)... On Oct 29 vs the Pirates, the first-period goals by Matt Tennyson and Micheal Haley, one at 16:37 and the next at 16:53, were four seconds shy of the team record. Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. It was only the fourth time in nine seasons the Sharks have scored goals less than 20 seconds apart.
*Fast start... Evan Trupp scored just 22 seconds into the first period on Dec 6 in St. John's and Bryan Lerg scored 15 seconds in vs. Manchester on Dec 26. Graham Mink holds the record for fastest goal just 11 seconds into the game on March 7, 2008.
*Good Boys... the Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL averaging 10.05 minutes per game....the Sharks have been shorthanded just 135 times this season (3.21 per game) which is the least times shorthanded in the AHL.

*Deja-Vu (almost).... Dylan Demelo scored at 6:33 of overtime on Oct 18.... Exactly one week after defenseman Matt Taormina scored at 6:34 of overtime on Oct 11.
*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and John McCarthy with BU in 2009.

*Keeping your hat on (Thanks Ballou)... Worcester had gone 263 games without one of its players recording a hat trick before Daniil Tarasov scored three goals in Springfield on Oct 26. That was easily the longest active streak in the AHL. The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only 11 times in the franchise's 670 games. The Sharks are 11-0 in those games and 1-15-3 in the 19 games in which the opposition has had a hat trick.

* Brothers... Freddie Hamilton is the older brother of Dougie Hamilton, who currently plays with the Boston Bruins.... Rylan Schwartz is the younger brother of Jayden Schwartz, who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues.
*Major Bonneau... Worcester Sharks tough guy Jimmy Bonneau has racked up 54 fighting majors in 145 games for the Worcester Sharks. Bonneau has set the Worcester Sharks record for most fighting majors in a season in 2011-12 with 22, surpassing Frazer McLaren (21 in 2008-09). Jimmy has 126 fighting majors in 340 AHL games along with 947 penalty minutes.

Coming Up for the Worcester Sharks:
The Worcester Sharks return back to action after the four day AHL All-Star break with two games this weekend.
On Friday, the Sharks travel to Providence for a 7:05pm start vs. the Bruins to kick off a home-and-home series.
On Saturday, the Sharks host the Bruins during the 4th annual "PINK in the RINK" event to benefit the Cup Crusaders presented by Pepsi on Saturday. For the fourth straight season, the DCU Center Ice will be colored PINK and the Sharks will wear commemorative PINK jerseys sponsored by Pepsi to benefit the Cup Crusaders and to support breast cancer awareness and research.
The PINK jerseys will all be auctioned off through raffle, Chinese auction, silent auction, a post-game live auction, and a select few via an online auction; with proceeds to benefit the Cup Crusaders. The Sharks will also be selling PINK mystery autograph pucks with proceeds to benefit the Cup Crusaders.
Before the Worcester Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7pm, the St. John's high school varsity hockey team will battle St. Peter-Marian high school at 4pm in the 9th annual High School Hockey Classic presented by Anna Maria College. Hang out with the WXLO Street Team as doors at the DCU Center open at 3:30pm with one ticket good for both games!
