January 27, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch and Burdick BMW announced Sean Eccles (Syracuse Cougars) and Gabe Vinal (Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt) as the Burdick BMW High School Hockey Athletes of the Month for December.
Sean Eccles, a senior defenseman who attends Corcoran High School and plays for the Syracuse Cougars, racked up 21 points (14g, 7a) in seven December contests, including hat tricks Dec. 1 vs. Watertown IHC and Dec. 15 at Fayetteville-Manlius.
"There are times during games that Sean makes it look easy," said Cougars coach John Purcell. "However, his success is a result of being self-driven and the hardest working player we have ever coached. [He is] a true leader and captain."
Eccles has 23 goals and 35 points in 14 games this season, the second highest totals in Section III and IV, helping the Cougars to a 12-2-1 overall record.
Gabe Vinal, a sophomore goaltender who attends Christian Brothers Academy and plays for the combined CBA/J-D team, did not lose in seven December appearances. He was 6-0-1 with a 1.80 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. Vinal posted a 24-save shutout at Clinton Dec. 26 in a 2-0 CBA/J-D win.
For the season, Vinal is 9-1-2 with three shutouts, a 1.35 goals-against average and .942 save percentage, the highest mark of any Section III or IV goalie with at least six appearances. Vinal is the only goalie with three shutouts in all of Section III and IV. CBA/J-D is 12-1-2 overall.
