Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, N.C. - With both the Florence RedWolves (6-11) and Wilmington Sharks (12-9) coming off losses, Tuesday night's contest was important to each team but the home team came out on top with a 7-3 victory.
The RedWolves took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but when the first two batters of the bottom half of that frame reached and scored for the Sharks they never looked back.
Zach Stephens tagged a ball over the left field fence in the top of the third, before Grayson Atwood became the second batter to walk and then score. His run proved to be the game winner on Alex Freedman's single.
A second unearned run was scored in the fourth, with Aaron Preston reaching on an error for the second time in the game. He was sacrificed to second by Mayers, then scored on a Stephens knock to left.
Florence got one back in the fifth and tacked on one more to close the gap to 5-3 in the sixth, but couldn't come up with enough to complete the comeback with Wilmington extending their lead in the seventh and eighth innings. Six batters came to the plate in each frame for the Sharks, with Scott Coleman and Cole McInturff scoring the final two runs of the night to put the margin at its final of 7-3.
The Sharks continue three-game homestand Thursday, also against Florence, before a four game weekend road trip. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, find Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
