Morehead City Marlins News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C.- Gabriel Loweree launched an RBI double to left center field in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Columbia Blowfish (12-6) to a 3-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (7-15) Tuesday evening at Capital City Stadium.
J.D. Osborne (1-0) earned the win for Columbia, tossing three innings and giving up just one hit and no runs. Evan Zerff (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run in 1 2/3 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
The Marlins opened the scoring in the second inning, scoring two runs. Robbie Rea led off with a walk and Chad Shannon followed with an infield single. The throw to first base on Shannon's single was thrown errantly down the first base line and Rea came all the way from first base to score. Corey Bass followed with a single that advanced Shannon to third and Shannon then scored on a double play ground out to give the Marlins a 2-0 advantage.
The Blowfish answered in the bottom of the frame, when Jarrod Reed doubled with two outs. He came around to score when the next batter, Ryan Gebhardt lined a single to right field to cut the Marlins lead in half at 2-1.
That score held until the bottom of the seventh inning when Reed was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. He advanced to second base on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Federico Castagnini to tie the game 2-2. Later in the inning, the Blowfish loaded the bases with two outs, but Evan Zerff entered for the Marlins and struck out Mike Wilson on 15 pitches to get out of the jam.
Both starting pitchers lasted four innings, as Jordan Kutzer allowed one run on five hits for the Marlins. Chase Rihtarchik gave up two runs in his start for the Blowfish, walking four and striking out three.
The Marlins are off tomorrow before they return to action Thursday night in an exhibition game against the U.S.A. Military All Stars. It's Thirsty Thursday presented by Miller Lite where all beer is just $1 all night long. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: The Marlins stole four bases in the first inning but still failed to score... The Marlins were 5-for-7 in stolen base attempts... The Blowfish left 12 men on base... It was the Marlins' second straight loss.
