JACKSONVILLE - Chris Smith (5'10,180) signs with the Jacksonville Sharks for his eighth year of professional football, seventh season in arena football.
Last year, Smith played for the Columbus Lions, helping his team go to the inaugural National Arena League Championship. Last year with the Lions, Smith played in 10 games, recorded 28 tackles (21 solo) (7 assists), three interceptions, and two pass breakups. In 2016, Smith played with the Columbus Lions as well. Prior to the Lions in 2016, Smith started the 2016 season with the Jacksonville Sharks. He made 11 tackles (10 solo) (one assist). In 2015, Smith started his career with the Sharks. He made 20 tackles (eight solo) (12 assists), six pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two interceptions. In 2014, Smith played for the Tampa Bay Storm. That season, Smith recorded 23 tackles (15 solo) (eight assists), six pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and six interceptions. In 2013, Smith started playing with the Storm, Smith made 62 tackles (45 solo) (17 assists), 11 pass breakups, and eight interceptions. In 2012, Smith was released from the Rams and played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. That year, Smith made 10 tackles (seven solo) (three assists), and one pass breakup. In 2011, Smith was an undrafted free agent, then was picked up by the St. Louis Rams and played three games. He recorded three tackles in those three games.
Smith attended college at Northern Illinois University, where he played cornerback. In 2009, Smith played in 13 games, recorded 70 tackles (43 solo) (27 assists), and four passes defended. In 2010, Smith played in 13 games and recorded 70 tackles (50 solo) (20 assists), and three interceptions.
Smith is a native of Bradenton, Florida and played football at Palmetto High School in Palmetto, Florida.
