July 3, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Mississippi Braves News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Braves (37-37, 4-2) took their fourth in a row and the series with it before a quick turnaround to Trustmark Park for tomorrow night's July 4th game. A pair of homers from Cade Bunnell and Landon Stephens led to a four-run seventh inning and rallied the M-Braves past the Biloxi Shuckers (36-39, 2-4), 6-2, in front a sellout crowd of 6,098 fans on Monday night at MGM Park.
Stephens homered for the third time in two games and leads the Southern League with 16 home runs. The M-Braves scored six unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Alan Rangel battled around several baserunners to put together a decent start. Despite allowing 10 baserunners on six hits and four walks, the right-hander gave up just two runs in the second inning and left seven runners stranded. Rangel finished with two runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Biloxi would end up leaving 13 runners on base but still led 2-0 after six innings.
In the seventh, Bunnell got the M-Braves on the board with a solo shot down the left field line. Bunnell homered in back-to-back games and has 11 long balls this season. After Javier Valdes and Jesse Franklin V each singled, Stephens smashed a three-run homer to give the M-Braves a 4-2 lead.
Stephens leads the league with 16 home runs and leads the club with 45 RBI.
In the eighth, the M-Braves tacked on two more to lead 6-2. Justin Dean stole his 20th base and eighth of the series and scored on a wild pitch, and Franklin lined a ball off the third baseman's glove and into left field to score the second run of the inning.
Franklin went 2-for-4 with an RBI to cap off an incredible series. The outfielder collected nine hits, four home runs and eight RBI. Franklin homered three times on Saturday for the fourth time in club history.
Trey Riley pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings to follow Rangel, and Jake McSteen worked around three hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. Daysbel Hernandez closed out the game by striking out the side and has yet to allow in a run in 12 innings for the M-Braves.
The M-Braves return home tomorrow night for a six-game home series against the Montgomery Biscuits from July 4-9. The homestand features several great promotions, including an Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza, Ole Miss Night, a Floppy Cap Giveaway, and Saturday Post-Game Fireworks!
