Knoxville Smokies News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn- The Tennessee Smokies split a doubleheader with the Chattanooga Lookouts on Monday. The Smokies won the first game 15-10, and the Lookouts took the second game 5-2. Not only did the two teams split the doubleheader, but they split the series with three wins a piece.

The first game was played over the course of two days due to it being suspended in the top of the fourth inning after rain came down hard on the field. Coincidentally, the top of the fourth was the inning in which the Smokies did most of their damage, scoring nine runs. Four of those runs came on bases loaded walks. While the Lookouts hit three straight home runs in the bottom of the sixth, Cubs top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong would deliver the dagger in the top of the ninth. Crow-Armstrong smashed a two-run home run, and the Smokies would end up winning 15-10.

The second game was much lower scoring than the first, but just as entertaining. No runs were scored through the first three innings, but the Smokies broke through in the fourth inning. Pablo Aliendo and Jordan Nwogu both went yard to put Tennessee up 2-0. However, Quincy McAfee cut the Smokies lead in half with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning, and the fifth inning brought more good fortune for Chattanooga. Francisco Urbaez drove in two runs on a base hit to give the Lookouts a 4-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. The Lookouts added another run in the sixth to reach the final score of 5-2.

The Smokies will start a six-game series with the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday. The last series that Tennessee played against Birmingham was one of the most exciting of the season, featuring two 7-6 finishes, two 5-4 decisions and one 11-10 result. In total, the Smokies and Barons combined to put up 68 runs in that series.
