Midland RockHounds News Release

Seven RockHounds were elected to the 2008 Texas League All-Star Game in Springfield, Missouri on Wednesday, June 25th.

Jesus Guzman will start at third base for the South Division, while Tommy Everidge was named the team's designated hitter in place of Frisco's Chris Davis, who was called up to Triple-A Oklahoma City just several weeks ago.

Guzman is third in the league in batting average and hit well over .400 for the first month of the season, while being named Texas League Player of the Week on two separate occasions. This will be Guzman's second trip to the Texas League All-Star game, as he was named to the team in 2005 when he was with the San Antonio Missions.

Vincent Mazzaro, who currently leads the Texas League in wins and ERA, will make his first ever professional All-Star appearance at Hammons Field. Mazzaro will be considered a strong candidate to get the call to start the game, if his pitching schedule fits into his normal rest as a starter.

Catcher Anthony Recker and outfielder Jon Zeringue were named to the team as reserves. Recker will be taking part in his third straight All-Star game, as he was named an All-Star in 2006 with Kane County in the Midwest League and then again in 2007 with Stockton in the California League. Zeringue is second on the team, behind Everidge, in home runs this season.

James Simmons and Andrew Carignan, both in their first full season of professional baseball, round out the RockHounds all-star list. Simmons, who was drafted in the first round of 2007 June amateur draft, dominated Texas League hitters before being placed on the disabled list. Carignan started the season in Stockton, but was promoted to the RockHounds after just a month and has been the team's closer ever since.

The South Division will be managed by the San Antonio staff and led by Bill Masse, who is in his first season as the Missions skipper. The Missions staff earned the right to manage the All-Star Game after winning the 2007 Texas League Championship.
